DDC scrambles to eliminate rabies by 2020

BANGKOK, 20 December 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has maintained control and prevention measures of rabies at the local level by urging people to seek immediate vaccinations if they are bitten by dogs.

The government and relevant agencies have accelerated control measures for rabies and the Ministry of Public Health has collaboration with its partners such as the Department of Livestock and local administrative agencies to dispatch staff to operate at the local level in order to solve the problem thoroughly.

The operation will be extended to the elimination of other zoonotic diseases as well, as more than 70 percent of emerging diseases nowadays are identified as zoonoses, or infectious diseases of animals transmitted to humans.

How does this stop the spread of rabies? It is unlikely that humans are spreading rabies in any significant way.

Of course it is a good if you want avoid a horrible death.

Why don't they consider the massive feral dog plague this country suffers?

Unless they do something about the stray dog population, this is just a pipe dream.

2020 is to soon to forget about this claim. they should have said they have a 20 year plan.

It is impossible to get rid of rabies once it is in the country. Canada, USA have rabies.

Not sure about New Zealand ??

You won't control rabies and slash the death rate (Thailand is second to to India as the most dangerous country in which to be bitten by a dog) by telling people to get shots AFTER they have been bitten.

Of course, everybody who comes here from overseas knows if they don't they are dead meat. If Thais aren't aware of this already then the DDC has utterly failed to do the job of informing the public of the dangers.

All it takes is a little public education, starting in schools as kids are the most vulnerable victims of rabid animals.

Exactly how has the government "accelerated control measures" - and what are they?  These sound like more empty words spewed out by the administration's public relations department.

The scary reality is that of strays and soi dogs continue to roam the towns, cities and villages of Thailand -  and a substantial proportion carry rabies (14 per cent rural areas and far higher in places like Bangkok).

At my local hospital, in a popular seaside town, I heard that 20 tourists a day on average are treated for dog bites. All end up having a life-saving course of expensive injections. A nice little earner for the hospital but an indictment of the disease control system.

I have been through this unpleasant and costly process twice since I came to live here. Now, in the absence of real action to curb the dog menace, I intend to get vaccinated against rabies and would advice everyone to do the same. Not cheap, but cheaper than losing your life.

Thailand will never "solve the problem thoroughly" as the article promises until the government grasps the nettle, forces dog lovers to own and be responsible for their pets using a licence system and has strays systematically culled.

I am told Buddhists believe it is wrong to kill a dog because it could be a loved one returning from the dead in a different form.  But is it not even more wrong to let four-legged reincarnated relatives run around killing and injuring people?

I have dogs, i take of  care of them, vaccinate keep them in my property as they are my guard dogs as well as my pets,

Very few thais can understand this concept ( they can barely bring up children let alone dogs from what i can see)

All my dogs are rescued from the streets and lead a good life!

The 1000s of others  lead a sad existence, sadly a cull is really the only way forward, will it happen of course not!

yes rabies was eradicated in new zealand. was done many many years ago. every dog is registered and given shots every year. a vet travels around in a van and everyone takes their dogs in for a shots to control a variety of diseases. stray dogs are put in a pound to try and rehouse, if not they are put down. nz is a good example of how a system should be implemented.

Place more emphasis on dog owners to control and leash their animals or do you just consider them as dumb as the dogs?. As usual the statement starts at the end result rather than the beginning preemptive  strike.

What are they going to do. Go around to every soi and vaccinate every dog they see? I don't think so. Back home dogs are not able to run free and every one that had a dog had to get vacation against rabies. Then they are issued a dog tag for the collar.

Had a rabid fox corner my do my huge German Shepard in his dog house when I lived in the country ( i think the dog knew some thing was wrong with it). The fox took off when it saw me but word soon got around to the neighbors and it was eventually shot.
