Tourists warned to dispose less garbage during festive season

BANGKOK: -- The Health Department has appealed to tourists and members of the public not to use foam containers and to refrain from discarding garbage at tourist attractions in a way that may threaten the environment and pose a health hazard.

The department chief Dr Wachira Pengchan said that garbage normally piles up and left uncollected during festivals especially at tourist attractions, causing an eyesore for people.

Garbage such as foam containers and plastic bags has been washed into the sea, threatening the environment and marine lives, he added.

ok so tourists are being blamed for garbage in Thailand..........................well why not ban them all then you won't have a garbage problem ............................ seriously

sorry I couldn't think of anything sensible to say to this ..................garbage

whoever made this statement should be sent to the garbage pits on the islands with a shovel and a wheel barrow - hey this is now your responsibility - get digging.......

shocking

check tourists suitcases at the airport for garbage.......it must be coming from somewhere

Yeah, most tourists bring an extra large suitcase of styrofoam boxes and 7-11 plastic bags to make life more convenient here. It's good to throw them into the sea, as it's nature's way of washing them away.

However I'm sure they'll appreciate the warning and refrain from doing this from now on.

Tourists warned!!!

How foreigners been treated here since the junta took over is mindboggling. Hopefully one day the self appointed saviors' of Thainess will be thought by rest of the world that most garbage in their country is not coming from foreigners but from their own countrymen.

i've wandered around at most places for ages in the vain hope of finding a bin to throw stuff away, not even the stalls that sell you the stuff put bins out (too much work for them). More garbage bins (in fact any garbage bins at most spots!) and having them emptied regularily would solve most of the problem; more chance of the Pope converting to Islam before that happens.

You are correct......but the article makes no  mention of foreigners as being the tourists disposing of the rubbish.

Rather alarming considering the ever increasing numbers of tourists. Time to impose a garbage levy on all entering the country.

is there a new slogan in the making for TAT

submit your suggestions here............the winner will get a big empty bag singed by someone that made that statement in the OP..............priceless

It is Thais which throw most things in the gutter, due to non-education of keeping the country clean. Most of us has been instilled with this mindset from an early age.

Perhaps the government should start a campaign of keeping the country clean with TV adverts, rather than blaming the tourists and ignoring the truth.

Nothing to do with foreigners.

This is true...maybe the gov't should invest in placing bins around public areas...real simple!...you could even have separate bins for plastics, papers, and so on

The government wants to liken themselves to Singapore's "clean and organized" repressive one-party state. Unfortunately, Singapore's gov't is skillful, technologically advanced, rational instead of superstitious, has vision, etc...

There is also an understanding on how to use toilets.

"Regarding public toilets at tourist attractions, he claimed that 74 percent of them have met the required standards. But he said that the tourists themselves and those responsible for taking care of the public toilets must help to keep them clean and to flush them every time it was used."
