Water filter cartridges cleaning or replace ?

Recommended Posts

We have a 5 stage water filter system under the sink for potable water. Now, i wonder if the cartridges could get cleaned instead replacing, but as i found there is a resin filter im not sure how or if it works , as well the one named CTO .

Any suggestions??

Resin and carbon cartridges cannot be cleaned / regenerated **

The particulate filters can be washed, but to be honest once they need cleaning they're pretty much dead anyway.

I would just replace the lot.

** Actually, resin and carbon can be regenerated, resin with a salt solution, carbon by heating (good luck if it's in a plastic housing) but is it really worth the hassle?

Its not really because of saving money, but rather for avoiding unnecessairy waste and reusing whats still good .

What percentage of Salt Solution ?

Thank you anyway , will look into it.

We have a reverse-osmosis unit which has a pre-filter of a ceramic particulate filter, carbon and resin. We also have a polyester "crunchy bits" filter on the incoming supply to take out the really big bits.

We change the cartridges on the RO about once a year (just two of us using the water for drinking), invariably Wifey notices the taste changing so I replace the lot and she's happy again.

How dirty is your incoming supply?

No idea of the coming water quality. We just not noticed that the water has some small particles but taste is still good , neutral. So we washed the ceramic filter , it was all brown stuff in there. The CTO is a bit brown, dark but seems still ok .

We are not owner , so dont wanna spend on maintenance if we can avoid.

Up date:

The Resin filter filled up with common salt , after few minutes running fresh water trough and it tastes much better than before, somehow softer or sweeter. The guy in Homepro recommended it as well so we tried it out, after the whole system filled up with Hydrogen peroxid , running again with fresh water for 10 or 15 minutes and  its all like new.

Saved me at least 1000 THB...

Interesting ideas I hadn't heard of before.  Is the resin filter a water softener of sorts?  Reason I ask is that salt is how you refresh the element in a water softener, or is it just coincidental that salt recharges both resin water filter cartridges and water softeners?

@thetruth revealer:  What inspired you to used hydrogen peroxide?  It sounds like you combined HO and salt at the same time?  How did you fill the system with HO?  Or, did you soak the resin cartridge in a bucket in a saline solution made with salt and HO?

Ours doesn't get used to heavily so I just replace the whole lot once a year including all the lines. Also add 1 after the post that's full of rocks to supposedly put some minerals back in. You can find it and probably any filter on this site. Decent prices also.

duan daw has great filter prices, cant believe how much stores want for them. I suggest to anyone to go buy a small drip irrigation screen filter setup (they are cheap) to place before your filter system, you wont have any problems after that.

Apparently the Polymer used as Resin Filter works as a water softener, but also for ion exchange, im not 100% sure exactly to be honest.

So what i have done first is, taking out the Resin Cartridge of its Container and in the 1. Stage i filled some 6% Peroxid approx. 1dl , and let it trough the whole system for a few minutes, until you will see and smell when its flushed out.

Then, step  2 ; simply mixed some common salt into a bowl with Resin polymer ``bubbles `` , put them back into the Cartridge and leave it for lets say half hour, then start running the water from incoming source until it doesnt taste salty anymore.

Thats it, its really good and tasty fresh water as i only know from Spring water sources back home in Swiss.

The reason  why choosing Peroxid is , you could actually use bleach , but its not as safe and some residue could remain. Peroxid breaks down easy and is non toxic after that.

And , No, i didnt use the salt and Peroxid at the same time , i guess there would be some undesired chemical reaction.

I dont think it would make sense to use Peroxid for cleaning the Polymer resin.

Thats why i took it out when first running it trought the whole thing.

Its the last step of the proceed to use the salt .

Mine is a counter-top filter with the cartridges on top, with their opening on the bottom.  Sounds like I'd need to invert it to use your method.  What are "Resin polymer 'bubbles'"?

Here in Thailand,

Do you have any reference or part #'s from Duan Daw for this setup?

Thanks!

I got mine from DO home in the gardening/sprinkler section, should be easy to find in any home store with irrigation supplies. We have village well water and it is full of sand and debris, my water tank is never dirty. Oh try to get one with a clear housing as it makes it easy to know when to clean.

Right on! Thanks!
