What is your current status, visa history?

From Mukdahan you cross over to Savannakhet where there is a Thai consulate.

A fairly recent thread about visa application in Savannakhet:

It is pretty easy once you are in Mukdahan. You want to arrive in Mukdahan by 9:00 am at the latest to allow plenty of time to arrive at the Thai consulate before 11:00 am. There is a bus from Mukdahan bus station to the bus station in Savannakhet. You get a Lao visa on arrival (cheapest if paying in US$, visa photo needed). On arrival at Savannakhet bus station, walk to the consulate 10-15 mins, or take an overpriced local songtaew. You apply for the visa in the morning before 11:00 am (application form, 1000 baht, photos, photocopy of passport id page and Lao entry stamp) and receive the passport back with visa the afternoon of the following day. The Avalon Hotel near the bus station is often recommended as a place to stay. It is a convenient location, and pretty good compared to nearby alternatives, but you need to have low expectations or prepare to be disappointed.

For getting between Bangkok and Mukdahan, there are two main options:

  • Fly-ride service by Nok Air or Air Asia. This flies you to one of the nearer airports and provides a 2-3 hour minibus transfer between the airport and Mukdahan. I recommend this for the return. If you take it going, it arrives too late for the consulate connection the same day (which may be OK if you fancy looking around Mukdahan for a few hours, and staying there overnight).
  • Overnight VIP bus from Mochit. This arrives at a very convenient time for the connection with the bus into Savannakhet. If you can tolerate long bus journeys, this is probably best when going to Mukdahan.

The best thing is always to be prepared for what you do. If not it´s always better to take a more safe alternative.

A question. May be a stupid one. Last time i went to Savannakhet, i first checked in to the hotel and went the following day to the consulate. In case someone just apply for the visa at the same morning as he arrived, and then check in to the hotel, is a copy of the passport sufficient?

Yes it is.

There are a few reasonable hotels just outside Savvanakhet bus station , across the road and around the corner .

300 Baht upwards for the night

Even a pic on your phone is good enough for hotel booking. Low cost b&b not bothered about documents .
