The Polish truck driver who was overpowered and killed when his vehicle was used as a weapon in the Berlin Christmas market attack has been buried in his hometown of Banie.

Over 100 lorries drew up outside the church and hundreds of drivers along with Polish President Andrzej Duda came to honour Lukasz Urban.

Duda paid his respects to wife Zuzanna and 17-year-old son Adam. The trucks sounded their horns to signal the beginning of mass.

Urban was the first of Anis Amri’s victims, shot in the head and left for dead in the cab as Amri made his murderous drive. Polish lorry drivers have begun a charity drive for Urbans’s family, while one already started by a British lorry driver has gone past the 200,000 euro mark in the UK.

Eleven other people died and 50 were injured when Urban’s truck ploughed through the crowd of shoppers on December 19. Amri would escape, only to be shot by Italian police in the early hours of December 23 in Milan.

German prosecutors say he was killed in possession of a pistol of the same calibre used to kill Urban.
