At least 15,000 vans could be taken off the roads

AS MANY as 15,163 inter-provincial passenger vans on fixed routes could be taken off Thailand’s roads by 2019 because they are not appropriate for public transportation, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krue-Ngam said yesterday.

 

Wisanu said that the Transport Ministry’s proposal to use Article 44 of the interim charter to immediately tackle the problem with passenger vans did not solely stem from the horrific crash in Chon Buri on Monday which killed 25 people and injured two others.

So, we can see 100,000 motorcycles taken off the roads for driving without licences? We now would have 15,000 school vans among the villages...??

Minivans don't kill people. It is the drivers of minivans who kill people. Better if they took 15,163 looney drivers of any sort of vehicle, including minivans, off the road.

They wont be taken off the roads,they will only morph into another

form of transport. one serious crash,and you get a knee jerk reaction, 

they are obviously needed for people to get around,so what is going

to replace them ?,maybe they have not thought that far forward.

And then 16,000 vans will reappear back on the road a week later in khaki colours.

Those in government making these decisions never think further than their wallets. I predict they are scheming up something where they and their "connections" can cash in on this decision. This is where Thai creativity really comes to the fore.

Nothing the police will ever do can stop these imbeciles! They are in plague proportions.. Wiping out rats in bangkok would be far easier!

Wipe them all out by stopping service's is the only way and I applaud the move.

Replace with scheduled service and and micro buses that will get rid of half the drivers and are easier to control as there will be far less of them

Also you can't throw a 20 seater around like a Ferrari so there will be far less accidents

It's an amazing commentary on the sad state of "journalism" in Thailand that news outlets like The Nation write these kinds of articles, and entirely fail to address -- among other things:

 

--how the transport demand now served by those vans is going to be served if they're somehow removed.

 

--how exactly did the government come up with such a precise figure at 15,163 vans? And what exactly does that number represent?

 

--idiot drivers can still be idiots driving anything.  Take an idiot, unsafe minivan driver and put him instead into a bus, and what do you get? An idiot and unsafe bus driver, and there are already plenty of those on the roads, as indicated by the regular and often fatal bus crashes.

 

PS - The Nation had a much better article the day before, that at least surfaced the government's apparent plan to replace a lot (all?) of the inter-provincial van routes with mini-buses. At least, the day before article started to address the issue of unsafe drivers are unsafe drivers, and the need to install speed limiting devices and driver changes across the board, regardless of the vehicle type.

Bigger buses are coming they said. And also more trains/skytrains/riverboats....

It's an amazing commentary on the sad state of "journalism" in Thailand that news outlets like The Nation write these kinds of articles, and entirely fail to address -- among other things:

The only positive if this happens is fewer vehicles on the road. Should translate into fewer accidents, but not necessarily proportional reduction.

Ask yourself this question. If you had to choose would you go bus or van?
If a bus has a head on with a Honda the whole bus load of passengers are not gonna die.

I'd agree that overall, one's chances of NOT dying are probably better in a bus vs a mini-van.

 

But all you have to do is read the news every day to see a never-ended cavalcade of bus crashes here often with multiple fatalities and then even more injuries.

 

Size may make up a little bit for idiot drivers, but there's still plenty of opportunities to be dead or injured riding long-trip buses in Thailand.

The bad ones are usually fatigue and falling asleep. I don't know how they would ever control that. Most thais will fall asleep at the drop of a hat unless they are playing candy crush on the smart phone

Replace them with unicorns. Flying unicorns. Roads are too dangerous just for regular unicorns. 

 

Let's face it. Driving in Thailand is incredibly dangerous because there is no law enforcement for moving vehicles. That's not going to change. It is what it is. It would take a complete cultural change by the Thais to effect change. Forgedaboutit.

Look even a big General with 44 in his pocket can't get them of their <deleted>...So better forget about them, they will never work and still get paid. 

 

Hopefully the General can get the soldiers do policework, they are young fresh strong men and will listen to his orders.

You still have "faith" in the Police to do anything? thought they were all busy "studying" for their exams!

i'm setting up a firm that buys and exports vans to Myanmar as we speak. the road accidents there are becoming HORRIFIC as as well!

15 million vehicles of the road and driver education to they left and allowed on the roads and it will start to help...

And many people in the "West" think that driver less cars are a good idea........

how do you programme in "noodle stall approaching on the wrong side being pushed by middle aged woman with defective eyesight"? or

"mini-van ploughing through 25 foot wide central drainage ditch at 130 kmh about to slam into you"?

"GP" Gene Pool is uneducated, and with no self discipline, combine with impatient, soon death and distruction will follow !! 

My insurance man wanted 500 baht to skip the vehicle test for the tax ,I not pay so went to test centre ,the guy moved my car forwards 5 meters and test was done .i keep my car in good working order ,services etc. but Thais not maintain anything so how many are truely road worthy ,if they want take some of the road ,start with the dodgy ones today
