Classical Music

Due to a hard disc mishap I've lost my classical music collection. I've wandered round Patty and found it a cultural desert and made 3 trips to Pantip Plaza but they have very little of interest. I tried for free downloads on the Net (old habits die hard) but that avenue seems closed or maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. I've never heard of farang musical societies and PSC smiled when I asked. Anybody got ideas other than importing?

If you ever come up to Mae Sai - out of the way, I know - if you cross off into Burma there is a small shop selling classical CDs from China - they have a comprehensive selection.

Must have bought at least 25 CD's of classical music in Pattaya, but all off market stalls.

Surprisingly i found CD shops with classical sections in IT Centre, Royal Garden Plaza, Central and Lotus. MBK also has a good one in BKK.

For about 700 baht at IT Centre you can get a 40MB second hand Hard Disc in case for back up which would save anything of value seperate to the Computer.

In Royal Garden Mall, on the second floor, there is a large music and DVD store, in the CD section, they have a fairly decent classical music selection. There does not seem to be common pricing structure.

For example some box sets represent enormous value, yet some single CD's are expensive.

Also, in the used and second hand CD section, you can pick up some classical CD bargains, however they are hard to find, it will take about 20 minutes to wade through all the Thai pop chart rubbish.

That's a great place to buy cds. You can get the real thing almost as cheap as you can buy copies in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. :o

In BKK, two or three good shops for CDs in Fortune Town, and, if you want to pay full price, there's a very good little shop in Emporium right next to CD warehouse (also another branch in Paragon Centre).

As regards "farang music societies" , concerts are put on in BKK quite regularly by the Bangkok Opera and Orpheus Choir http://www.bangkokopera.com/home.html and the Bangkok Music Society Choir http://www.bms.in.th

There is a monthly email listing of classical music events in BKK, sent out by a guy called Jack Gittings. Email him and he'll put you on his list.
