Getting a little worried about all of these visa run buses crashing of late. I need 60 days after my current tourist visa runs out and I was just going to do a Penang Malaysia run again for a single entry visa. I'm in Phuket and now thinking of other cheap means. I am on new passport and only have visa stamps in my passport. No walk in's at all yet. Can I get 1 fly in and out and then apply for a 30 day extension at Phuket immigration? I really can't go on another bus of death.

There is no walk in tourist visa. You can get a 30 day visa exempt entry by land or air if you qualify for it. The entry can be  extended for 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.-

You can also fly to Penang instead of going overland. Check for flights to there.

Do recognize that, as far as visa exempt entries go, the new passport makes no difference. Immigration, when you enter, can see your full history of entries, including those on your old passport. This may not matter, but if you have many previous visa exempt entries on your old passport, and (in general) have been in Thailand continuously for an extended period on tourist entries,  you might run into problems. Even in the worst case, most people do get in OK, but I advise you to have a backup plan just in case you are unlucky.

Everybody gets a 30 day entry at a land border crossing now. The 15 day rule was rescinded on the the 31st of December.
