Well-known film producer fined for contempt of court in rice-pledging trial

OSLO (Reuters) - World temperatures hit a record high for the third year in a row in 2016, creeping closer to a ceiling set by the Paris climate change deal, with extremes including unprecedented heat in India and ice melt in the Arctic, scientists said on Wednesday.

Falsely jailed or fraud? Police to prosecute schoolteacher’s accomplices

Police don’t believe the story of Jomsap Saenmuengkot, the teacher who was jailed for a 2005 hit-and-run murder but recently released by a royal pardon. Jomsap is requesting a retrial to clear her name and says she has found the true criminal, a man named Sak Wapee, as well as a group of witnesses to verify her story. However, the police are calling these people accomplices to her lie.

Corruption index hits six-year high

Thailand’s Corruption Situation Index (CSI) last month reached its highest point in six years, while corruption has caused an average loss of 0.8 per cent of gross domestic product since military rule was established, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting.

PHUKET:-- Immigration officials have declined to explain why Czech fugitive Zedenek Pfeifer, arrested in Phuket on Tuesday night (Jan 17), has been handed down less than the legally mandated minimum sentence for illegally staying in the country, known locally as “overstaying his visa”.
