BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry is to propose the Food and Drugs Administration to remove oral Colistin anti-biotic drug from drug shelves to put a stop to widespread abuses of the drug which may lead to bacterial resistant to the drug.

Public Health Minister Dr Piyasakon Sakonsatayathorn has expressed concern over the improper use of Colistin in pig farms to treat pig infection which, he said, can result in bacteria becoming resistant to the drug.

Although listed as a dangerous drug, Colistin can be bought at any drug store with recommendation from pharmacist.

Meanwhile, Mr Vivat Pongviwattanachai, a veterinarian and president of pig raisers cooperative in Ratchaburi, said Colistin is suitable for use with piglets less than 20 days old and is unfit for longer-term use due to its high price.
