ALOK SHARMA

ALOK SHARMA, the United Kingdom’s Minister for Asia and the Pacific, yesterday reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to Thailand on a one-day visit to the Kingdom for talks on issues including trade, human rights and election plans.

Sharma, the most senior official in the British foreign service to visit Thailand since the military coup in 2014, said there had been a recalibration in the UK’s foreign policy following Brexit, last year’s referendum in which Britons voted to leave the European Union.

He held talks with Deputy Prime Minster Somkid Jatusripitak, Digital Economy and Society Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj and Deputy Foreign Minister Virasakdi Futrakul to discuss the strength of Thailand and the UK’s relationship as well as opportunities to increase trade and prosperity.

It is quite clear that the main emphasis and concern here is trade, trade, trade - Britain going begging for Thai customers post-Brexit (if Brexit ever in fact happens). There is not much emphasis here on human and civil rights abuses - still less a line in the sand whereby Britain says: 'Unless Thailand returns to a full and genuine democracy and respects fundamental human rights, our trade links will have to be radically cut.' That is the only thing that the junta might (just might) understand - being hit in the pocket. But even that is doubtful. And of course Britain has proven - witness the British Government and British police collaboration in the appalling Koh Tao disgrace - that they have no moral compass or guts whatsoever.

Thailand only has to look at the UK still getting into bed with Saudi Arabia to understand that any 'concerns' are mere words and nothing to get worked up about when the bottom line is all about money.

Did the British police have any say in the Koh Tao investigation?

The British police came to Thailand to observe the Koh Tao 'investigation' (yes - disgusting stitch-up is more accurate) and never uttered a single syllable in protest at what was going on. Then they returned to England and still did not speak out against the crimes that were being committed (by the 'police' and 'government' in Thailand) in this regard. In fact, the family of one of the murdered victims were even persuaded (one can only assume) to speak out in favour of the Thai police and their shockingly perverted 'investigation'.

One can only hang one's head in despair.

A country like the UK, which sells billions of pounds worth of arms to the butchers of Saudi Arabia, is unlikely to to let Thailand's poor human rights record stand in the way of a trade deal.

Always you can have input, but they don't have to take any notice, especially if it is to protect their image , they love drug busts , because generally everyone else does the hard yards and they get the credit, that's the nicest I can do.................:coffee1:

Just the same as Germany, France, the US, Belgium, Sweden (yes even good old PC Sweden) and all the other arms manufacturing countries are exactly the same - not different at all.
