BANGKOK: -- The Appeals Court this morning upheld the Criminal Court's ruling that sentenced a Thai wife to 20 years in prison after finding her guilty in a murder conspiracy of a 79-year-old Japanese teacher in September 2014.

Mrs Pornchanok Chaiyapa and her Thai husband Somchai Keawbangyang were convicted in a conspiracy to kill Mr Yoshinori Shimato and chopped his body and threw the pieces into a canal in Bang Bo district of  Samut Prakarn in September 2014.

Somchai was given a life sentence while Pornchanok receive 20 years in prison.

At the hearing of her appeal today, the Appeals Court said that although Pornchanok confessed to using her Japanese husband’s credit card, she denied her involvement in the murder conspiracy.

After Shimato’s death made the headlines this week, the daughter of Phornchanok’s previous husband, Katsutoshi Tanaka, came forward to call on police to re-open her father’s case.

Tanaka reportedly died from falling down the stairs in 2003.

Keiko Matta, 31, said she suspected foul play, especially since Phornchanok reportedly claimed Bt3 million from Tanaka’s life insurance.

Matta is Tanaka’s daughter from another woman.

Ya, I thought from memory that this probably was the same case of the Thai woman who supposedly had gone thru several foreign husbands, each of them meeting an untimely death.

They finally caught her on one, but not yet on the ones who died before.

Even so, as Pib noted in the separate thread today on the security guard who murdered his co-worker over 20 baht in lunch money, she'll probably released in a few years after receiving reductions and ultimately a pardon for her sentence.

At least when it comes to Thai murderers, life prison sentences here often don't actually mean life in prison. There's even a Thai police general walking around who can attest to that.

If memory serves, he originally got the death sentence. Then that was reduced to life in prison. Then that was reduced to 50 years in prison. Then that was reduced to 19 years and his ultimate release in 2013.

And then there was another one in recent years with similar reductions, though hardly unique in the cirumstances:

Quote

This year, Serm Sakhonrat, a former medical student who murdered and butchered his girlfriend, will be freed on Dec 18 after serving a reduced prison sentence of eight years. His prison term was reduced five times. He was initially sentenced to life imprisonment.

She's lucky that it's 20 years instead of a dirt nap.  20 years ago it would have been the later.

Nah. this can't be right.

Everyone knows that the RTP and the Thai courts never punish Thais who commit crimes against foreigners

I am sure if there was a mass uprising and all foreigners were massacred, that the Thai government would claim it was mass suicide, and that no Thai people were involved. Our lives are expendable, more so than the poor people of Thailand, only HI-SO's have any human value (they are above the law, and without fault).

The thing is he's a Jap, one the orientals, the foreigners you are talking about are us frangs who are classed slightly higher than Burmese, the lowest form of life in LOS, the thais might have got off, had the victim been a frang!

PS All tongue in cheek, before someone calls it thais bashing!
