BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority was on Thursday ordered by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak to speed up feasibility study of at least two mass transit projects in Phuket and Chiang Mai to be completed and submitted to the cabinet for consideration within this year.

He singled out Phuket and Chiang Mai as priority targets for feasibility student, noting that the two provinces have high economic potential but, at the same time, have serious traffic problem.

Meanwhile on Thursday, the MRT signed six contracts with private constructers for the construction of the Orange Line electric train system between Thailand Cultural Centre and Min Buri.

The starting point of the Orange Line at Thailand Cultural Centre will connect with the Blue Line or the current underground train and run through Rama IX road to end at Suwinthawong covering 17 stations altogether.

I believe the trough is now only 1/4 full.  These projects should empty it and no one will put their hand up for the job.

And the project for a mass-transit system in Chiang Mai has been under-discussion for 20+ years, so I wouldn't hold my breath, on anything suddenly happening up here !

I'm assuming that there would be massive push-back by tuk-tuk and songtaw driver associations.  Anyway, Chiang Mai is built like a wheel spoke.  I can't wrap my head around how they would supply electric rail in sufficient locations to offset the traffic issues.  Best of luck planning that.  They have to build elevated rail lines up the major arterials with stations originating in the old city.  Talk about a 'Mega-Project.'

Its that big leap from consideration to shovels in the ground. Therein lies the problem. Yes Chiang Mai needs a mass transit system in the worst way not only to ease traffic problems but to also cut back on pollution. Sad solutions are never implemented in an orderly fashion they are always cobbled together after the crisis has well become a crisis.

Not in our lifetime anyways. Things will only change when one of these tourist bus caravans that are headed up by the horn blowing "tourist" police are gridlocked for a weekend.

Development outside of Bangkok ?  Unheard of, unless you count the State Railway of Thailand, founded in 1951 and funded by the World Bank.

There are brand new roads all over Thailand .
