You can apply for a re-entry permit that will keep the remainder of the 60 entry and the 30 day extension of it when you enter the country.

You could apply for the 30 day extension and then apply for the re-entry permit as soon as the extension stamp was done.

Wouldn't that make sense only if you were worried about the 2 times a year visa exempt entries?

That rule is only for doing the entries at a land border crossings.

There could be many reasons for getting the re-entry permit. For example not everybody is eligible for visa exempt entries.

Getting a re-entry permit for both could also give more than a 30 day entry if the extension was applied for prior to the 60 day entry ends
