Pattaya's image in the spotlight again - this time it's not the mean streets but the sidewalks!

PATTAYA: -- Local residents have called in the national press to complain about some of the sidewalks in Pattaya.

Manager went to the resort yesterday after residents grumbled about a half kilometer section of pavement between north and central Pattaya.

Apparently it was dug up two years ago at least to lay some pipes but no one bothered put it back together again.

They just left it in an almighty mess. It causes accidents to Thai and Western tourists and creates problems with the traffic.

Motorcycle taxi driver Amnat Laosuwan, 45, who has been working in the area for five years said he had seen many accidents. And, he said, there are lots of tourists in the area you get a very bad impression.

It is high time the authorities pulled their collective fingers out and did something about the eyesore, the residents told Manager. The

locals added that is was doing nothing but harm to the image of the resort.

The condition of the sidewalks is not helped by the same people riding on them, which appears quite common.

Been like it for years, to many tourists wearing the pavements out I suspect, Wow looks empty in this photo

Taxi's and mototaxi's get more customers because of this.

Is it really hard to tell the constructor to finish the sidewalk or he will get sued?

This sidewalk looks better than many, at least people can walk along it. Check out the sidewalk on Soi 13/4 where the sidewalks have been COMPLETELY taken over by businesses operating along the street  and are unusable as such ! Not only have the sidewalks been taken over but some have come right out to the centre of the roadway !!! Police or military, get in there and sort them out please.

They dont have time to worry about small things like that, they are too busy trying to change the image of pattaya from bad to no good. If they are not

careful no one will be going there soon.

....and not to talk about the motorbike-taxi-booths that are located on every major corner of the sidewalks.....

Wait a second...there are sidewalks in Pattaya?!?!? Really?

I thought they were alternative roads for motorbikes...

And the roads  south Pattaya road was dug up years ago to lay a water main and never resurfaced,

My guess is that will have had some quick temporary repair - probably a sheet of steel over the offending hole?

The worst part of the non repair between Klang and Nua on Third Road is right up towards Nua on the right hand side going north where the pipe has been laid next to the pavement and they have left a 60cm wide trough in the tarmac next to the pavement. You need to be aware if you drive up there and try and park.

The other problem is that they have dug up sections of the pipe at least 3/4 times in the last 3 months because I think there has been leaks - so arguably not much point in resurfacing it properly

There are a lot worse sidewalks than the one pictured.  At least the two people are able to walk side by side.  As I've mentioned before, there are several areas of Pattaya Second Road across from Hard Rock Hotel where there are no sidewalks at all.  Plenty of tourists around there and they have to walk in the very busy street.  Across the street the sidewalk is about 60cm wide and mostly useless with shrubbery, old telephone boxes and taxi doors blocking the walkway.  I'd be thrilled to have sidewalks like the one pictured.

The real point is that the contractor does not get paid anything until the job is signed off as finished by  the top guy in the government in  charge with issuing the contract and if he tsakes a bung or does not do the job right , nail him

But we are all aware of the slight difference between the words "Image" and "Bad Reputation" aren't we?

Next time, I hope that one will focus on  garbage dumped here and there and everywhere, where there is an open place  !!

Very bad image for Pattaya  !!

And the totally inadequate ( sewage) water treatment plants,  the virtually open sewers running under every road emitting some very nasty smells,( all running right into the sea) the spaghetti utility and electrical wires that electrocute at least one person every time it floods, the beach road rats, mangy rabid soi dogs, whacky races on any road that isn't at a total standstill and all night open air disco in residential areas

just to be getting on with.

Typical. Jerking their knees to some foreign trash reports, but can't be arsed to clean up their own backyard.

Its a case of finding him.

Well they should install a Pattaya walk of shame and put a picture of the contractor down first and then work down to all the people that did not respond to the complaint. Wipe your feet on them.

And the good news is that tourism should be up 30% this year.

Sorry seats cost money. They want to keep things costs bahtwise to a bare minimum. You will have to sit on the ground but not on your bare derriere

Does Pattaya actually have any sidewalks ?

If they are not being dug up, and also not being repaired, they are full of potholes and trip hazards.

Avoid the potholes and trip hazards, and you are faced with a multitude of general " stuff " ranging from the tables and chairs of some " Restaurant ": to signs that advertise everything from Botox to Beer Bars ( sometimes in the same building ), parked Motorcycles and also the sidewalk killers riding along them with said motorcycles.

And my absolute favourite, has to be the cobbled together sun screens with the garrot strings, metal poles, and umbrella spikes at eye level

I'll sit on my fake rattan plastic mat on Jomtien or Na-Jomtien promenade and risk the killer trees.

Yepper dishonesty does prevail sadly.

That's the first question you should ask yourself before visiting a foreign country....

Are the sidewalks good enough for ME ME ME to walk on or not? ?

Which actually includes the police as they want to head North from their Station!
