BANGKOK: -- The government assures that the 30-baht medical care service will go ahead and denies rumour that it will be scrapped.

The assurance of the medical service known as universal health care programme was given by Government Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd as the news of scrapping the programme was widely shared on the social media.

It said that the 30-baht medical service or the Gold Card program, may be scrapped due to the financial burden on the government.

According to National News Bureau of Thailand, the spokesman assured that on the contrary, the Ministry of Public Health and the National Health Security Office (NHSO) have collaborated to expand public healthcare benefits. For fiscal year 2018, the National Health Security Fund has been allocated a budget of 128.5 billion baht, or roughly 3,197 baht per person, an increase of 87.75 baht from fiscal year 2017.

What about health care for the retired foreigners living in Thailand?

Thai gov. and the Thai economy make a lot of money off foreigners living here yet ignore them but not their money.

Hospital costs have risen dramatically over the past few years. Health insurance is not available to most seniors.

You raise a very good point. If you retire in Costa Rica you MUST join the healthcare system and the price is dirt cheap (I think). When it comes to us retires there seems to be a "have your cake and eat it" approach. Also a health insurance mentality where as we really age the scales slide in our favor if there is insurance and not theirs. A plan was briefly floated some years back and then withdrawn. I think we are deserved of something. The government on the other hand cannot figure out what. Their purse is clutched pretty close to their chest they honestly hate spending money unless its in Bangkok. Its something like the statement Charlton Heston made about his rifle.

Looks as happy as Larry doesn't he?

Mind you, it's quite a long statement to give through gritted speech...

There was a health scheme for foreigners, it was started by Thaksin, all you

needed was the Yellow book, and it was free, don't know if a lot of people knew

about it though,I made use of it for about 3 years, then they introduced the

private scheme, you paid about 3K,but it was abruptly cancelled and your

payment was returned.

Yeah, health tourist parasites bleeding the system is really what Thailand needs, rich countries like the UK suffer enough with that problem, it would cripple Thailand.
