March 2017: Let’s celebrate Francophonie in Thailand

International Francophonie Day, celebrated worldwide on March, 20th will set off many celebrations also in the Kingdom of Thailand throughout the month of March.

A full month to celebrate Francophonie in Thailand

The celebrations of Francophonie will take a new dimension in 2017:  The International Organization of la Francophonie’s member states that have a diplomatic mission or consular post in Bangkok will organize several events.

To launch the Francophonie festivities in Thailand, a reception co-organized by the Embassies of Belgium, Canada, France, Morocco and Switzerland will take place on March, 1st during which each country will present their culinary specialties. On this occasion, the main institutional partners in Thailand will gather at the Swiss Residence: the embassies of the International Organization of la Francophonie’s member states, representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, Culture, Commerce, French-speaking Thai diplomats, the Thai Association of French teachers, heads of French university departments, France alumni, ...

A series of events in the fields of music (Axelle Red, “O”, François Lindemann and Swiss Art Songs and OPERA), gastronomy with “Goût de France”, cinema and art will follow to showcase the diversity of Francophonie to a large public (cf. program).

In parallel, French learners will be offered numerous activities. The French Embassy will organize pedagogical sessions for students where they can practice their language skills through drama, comics, singing or in short movie making workshops. French speaking diplomats from the Embassies of Belgium, France, Morocco and Switzerland will also visit selected universities to talk about their countries and their links to Francophonie. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in international French contests such as “le mot d’or” et “la plume d’or” and the French teachers will have the opportunity to participate in the “BELC” practical training.

Very lush and varied Francophonie celebrations await Thailand in March 2017!

What is Francophonie?

Francophonie represents one of the biggest linguistic zones in the world. More than just a common language, the members of the International Organisation of La Francophonie share humanist values and benefit from economical exchanges and cultural enrichment.

80 member states and governments are now part of the International Organisation of La Francophonie whose main missions are to:

• Promote French language, cultural and linguistic diversity
• Promote peace, democracy and human rights
• Support education, training, higher studies and research
• Develop cooperation for a sustainable development

Francophone countries are very involved in environmental issues with, for instance, the organization of the COP21 world conference in Paris in 2015 and the organization of COP22 in 2016 in one of the emblematic countries of Francophonie, Morocco.

Economic Francophonie

The French-speaking countries play an active part in the world economy, accounting for 15% of global wealth and 12% of international trade.

Many French companies are present in Thailand such as Accor, Decathlon, Dextra, Essilor, Faurecia, Freyssinet, JC Decaux, Michelin, Sofrecom and Veolia, only to name a few of the most famous ones. On March, 19th, at Terminal 21 Bangkok, the brand and career fair in Thailand “Bonjour Talents” will connect French leading companies with Thai candidates. The participating companies will present their know-how and their expertise in their respective fields. Visitors can access 1.000 job offers and training opportunities.

French language

French shares with English the distinction of being taught as a foreign language in the education systems of most countries around the world. French is thus the second most widely learned foreign language in the world, with almost 120 million students. In Thailand, French is taught in 245 secondary schools and more than 30 universities, with a total of about 40.000 learners.
There are currently 274 million French speakers worldwide.

Ridiculous, let the French and Thai both learn English so they all can speak to the rest of the world.

French is one of diplomacy language (In French you can say f...K with touch and subtlety) , The French is one of the 2 officials languages in NATO, French is the official language of the Olympic games...

All court in Europe speak French, the queen Elisabeth II is francophone and francophile

Unless you count the revolution in 1688, when the French tried to convert Siam to catholicism and were kicked out.  And the war of 1893, when the French took parts of Cambodia and Laos from Thailand. And the war of 1940, when the French sunk a Thai naval flotilla.  Yea, great friends.

Now if it were Francoise Hardy, Sylvia Vartan and Johnny Halliday or a few other, I would go. The Axelle girl is quite good but very modern.

The good thing with modernity : it tends to quickly turn old-fashioned....

Well since most here can't understand a single word of French, what about a French kiss?
Also hope you're all happy with mc Do style French fries, I will stick to the real Belgian fries and Belgian beers.

Hollywood makes 100 films each year, 5 -10 worth watching; France makes 20, 10 worth it. Whether the latter would resonate with young Thais, doubtful ( anymore than young Americans, Brits, Australians)...unfortunately. Young people aren't what they used to be.

Never mind the French capitulation to Thailand! Ever visited the Victory Monument in Bangkok?

It seems your understanding of English language is not very good

Court definition :

the establishment, retinue, and courtiers of a sovereign.

Example : the emperor is shown with his court

synonymes: royal household, retinue, entourage, train, suite, courtiers, attendants

Anachronistic Map of the French Empire, In Dark Green, the 1st Colonial Empire (1534 - 1815) including the Napoleonic Empire (1804-1814 and 1815) and other European territories having a provisional French military presence and not having Is part of the French colonial empire. In light green, the 2nd Colonial Empire (1815 - 1946) + territories under French military occupation such as Fezzan, Saar, etc. Not having been part of the French colonial empire.

The second map shows the current distribution of French territory in the world
