Scottish schools meals serve chicken from Thailand

By Lucy AdamsPolitical correspondent, BBC Scotland

School children are eating chicken produced 6,000 miles away in Thailand, a BBC investigation has found.

Scottish government ministers have repeatedly called for supermarkets and shops to buy local.

But the BBC found Scottish councils are spending millions importing food which could be sourced in Scotland - Glasgow alone spends £1.3m a year on imports.

Procurement body Scotland Excel said it had in the past been "difficult to meet poultry demand" from within Scotland.

Chicken which is packaged as "50% chicken" is the scary part.

Still reckon it will be better than the school dinners I used to get  . . .

Slow news day today is it?

Many years ago the UK's biggest chicken producer - Grampian Country Chickens (Scottish company) moved it's entire chicken processing operation to Thailand, and it became Grampian Foods Siam, then Golden foods Siam employing about 4000 people in Thailand, and at the time they could put an oven ready bird back on the shelves in the UK cheaper than they could by processing it at home.

Now they are complaining about buying chicken from Thailand because it is difficult to meet the procurement demand from within Scotland, .............priceless!!

it's clucking scandalous

Enjoy the chemicals, medicines etc.

Let me see if I fully understand this.  The factory chicken industry in Scotland, which was part of UK, a place that does not have the best of reputations with regard to ethical management etc, but  does meet UK regulations relating to that industry and is probably subject to some checks, wants to move its production of livestock to somewhere even cheaper to maximise profits.  Said move being to Thailand where management might not be as ethical and regulations might just not be as stringent in the control of chemicals and medicines entering the food chain.  End result the council saves money on feeding the wee bairns!

Always good stuff from Siam,CP saha and bettagro. But this is old news as thousands of tonnes of chicken is supplied into the UK  from Thailand Brazil to name just two countries. Lots of raw material also sent to the UK for further processing! Not just for schools!!

Hardly priceless, as those who are complaining are not those who moved the chicken processing operation to Thailand, they are merely both Scottish and they have every right to complain about the globalization of food.

Considering Thailand is a massive exporter of chicken, this is not exactly a surprise.

Of course it's cheaper than local, that's why the big companies moved here in the first place.

I remember thin slices of a rather leathery indeterminate meat, covered in lukewarm gravy. Known as 'toenails'.

Everything was grey. Do you remember the " Spitting Image'" sketches of John Major?

+1 it is garbage food. I worry about meat in thailand so ending up eating mostly vegetables and occasional, some seafood.

Knowing the condition of the seas, that may be risky too.

Seafood which is largely farmed using an array of chemicals; anti-bacterials, fungicides and growth hormones.

Of course, salad is the worst, full of pesticide and coated in fertilizer.

Wait till Salmond hears about this. She'll be demanding a referhendum on it.

Yes,, but the Australians always seems to wins.

On a more serious note, I have tried Thai cwickets (jing reet & also dtak dtaen) and they are very tasty , but no doubt the oil they are fried in and the substance they spray them with are also injurious to one's delicate health.?
