Fresh ocean fish in Chiang Mai -- revisited

Recommended Posts

In my M/cycling days one of the lads had a business going down to Nakhon Sawan and buying live fish which he transported back to CM in his pick up.

The fish lived in tanks full of water which was supplied by compressed air from a bottle.

His parents had him move to a bank as they where not happy about his enterprise.

How the hell do you obtain live ocean fish from Nakhon Sawan, I don't seem to remember seeing any oceans anywhere near there.  Where do they get them from?

Maybe a friend in Hua Hin could buy them fresh in the morning, pack them in an ice box and send them up on the evening Sombat Tour bus for you to collect the next morning.

To the best of my knowledge one guy delivered fresh Sea Fish to a market in Nakorn and my acquaintance had a decent business driving down and buying then selling on in CM

Try some lateral thinking.

Try some lateral thinking.

And where did the guy in Nakhon Sawan get his fresh Sea Fish from, which was the basis of my original question.  The local Sea Fish Farm or has Thailand got a fleet of fishing boats with fish tanks for holding the reduced number of live fish rather than the tradition stick em in the fish hold and pack them in ice method.

If these fish are caught out and sea and transported all the way to CM in a pick up truck (how many fish per trip) thru a number of intermediaries they must have been worth their weight in gold by the time they got onto a customers plate.

PS;  Have you tried replying without adding snide comments at the end of your posts?  I only asked a question which even you admit is not a definitive "I know the answer" response but just a "to the best of my knowledge" answer.  I was using my thinking processes, lateral and others and could not come up with a logical economic answer, hence my question.

There was a  seafood restaurant on the road to Mea Jo,opposite the the Ford dealer, who had the seafood come by aeroplane fresh everyday

in sterofoom boxes,direct from Phuket.

Of course they went out of business. And who knows if it was really 24 hours old or a couple of days, doused in Formalin to keep it looking fresh?

We eat seafood when we are by the sea. That's it.

I often see farm raised plah tubtim (red tilapia) at island tourist restaurants sold as "red snapper" for a very high price... there in no end to fishy scams here.

Must be some huge pick up and tank system with the correct water /air chemical/filtration etc. system to make it viable.  How many poor fish were transported in this barbaric method?

How far away is the Ocean to allow living ocean fish to be transported there?

How were they caught or if not caught where did these live fish come from?

If they are in an ice box they are not live and will have been dead for God knows how long!  Fresh they are not.

Try some lateral thinking.

So you are using the "best of your knowledge", not facts, just lateral thinking or making up the answer!

How should I know where the Sakon Fish market is ?

john

You said that was where these so called fresh ocean fish were coming from.  I assumed you had used facts not lateral thinking to come up with that response.

They were not live which "johnwilly" says was suggesting has happened, you are taking about "so called fresh iced/frozen/iced etc. fish." Not the same as live swimming fish being transported in some awful barbaric conditions.

I could not agree more.  Unless you catch it yourself, or see it being caught, you do not know if it is truly fresh or where it came from.

Most fish sold in shops, all round the world, labelled as fresh has every chance of being caught, stuffed down the hold, (packed in ice if you are lucky) landed on an open fish market (under the sun) to wait for hours until sold and bought and at best might get bought as fresh and sold to a "fresh supplier" that day.  Most fish bought is sent to be either frozen and then defrosted, not sold and so re frosted the defrosted etc etc as fresh or processed.

There are examples of "fresh" fish sold in UK supermarkets that are over six months old because of this freeze/defrost/refreeze cycle.

PS; (again!)

Please look at the definition of "lateral thinking" below from the OED.  As it states I think "johnwilly" has been creative in his own responses.  I am looking/asking facts not being creative and trying to make a point about the cruelty in the fish industry which cons people with the so called "fresh fish label".

lateral thinking

noun chiefly British the solving of problems by an indirect and creative approach.

Not only here,it happens all over the World, once the skin comes

off it's difficult to tell what kind of fish it is.I would love to eat

more fish, but Chiang Mai is too far from the sea,and I won't eat

Tilapia  , or Pangasius,in Makro I did find some Cod and Pollock,

that's what it was labeled as,looked nice and the price was cheap,

but cooking it ,it just melted away to next to nothing.

regards worgeordie     P.S. the only fish I eat now are John West Kippers.

A couple of years ago I asked if one of the moderators would change my board name from jonwilly to something like Willnomore.

I became John Willy at Infants school and that followed me all my life even into my time in the Army. An Irish pal could not get home for Easter so I invited him to stay with my family. He met my old mates and John Willy followed me to my 20 odd years in the Brit Army.

I went to wok in Mid east and met many old accountancies from my Army days so I was still John Willy, no problem for me.

When I returned to UK I decided to get on the net and the expert I knew, about a month on the net himself, explained that because of the small hard drives we had back then measured in Megs not Gigs, I should change my log on name from JohnWilly to jonwilly, saving a letter each time.

The many years later one guy out here explained that Jon was favoured by those who Bat for the other team, so jonwilly was asking for invites from the people who never stop looking for fellow travellers.

If a moderator would oblige I will quite happily change my board name.

and their where live seafish, snapper, lobster and some more species and they put them in the fishtanks and were swimming around!!!

And what has that post got to do with price of fish or this topic?

Suggest you PM Admin with your drivel rather than waste our time on here.

Yet another drivel post apparently with nothing to do with the topic.

Who or what is nasty? Is this just another of your self portraits? Your last two posts seem to be such as they make no sense as stand alone ramblings. It would help if you stayed on topic.

Even lateral thinking does net let people know what you are posting about unless you elucidate. Proper sentences help.

PS, Using the quote function, as I have done above, lets people know what the connection is between your comments/post and your thinking.

(I was going to say "thinking process, if you had any" but decided not to say that in case it upset you!)

Frozen fish unfortunately, when he can get it.

I am so pleased for you that you enjoyed your frozen fish meal.

Frozen ocean type fish is, after all, all I would expect to be served this far from the ocean.

Pacific Cod, processed in China, that's the only kind of Cod you can get here,

but some establishments are selling it as Altlantic Cod, a different species.

No kippers there I think,185 THB is the price but looks like

something else in that space,John West/Princess is  owned

by a Thai Company, which is  maybe why more selection now.

Correct.  I could not find any JW kippers in that section and as I was short of time I did not look to see if there was anything worthwhile in the frozen sections and for obvious reasons I went nowhere near the "fresh fish" section.
