Speciality coffee lovers in Phuket

Guys- any fellow speciality coffee lovers in Phuket? Where are you sourcing your Ethiopian, Colombian, etc. light roasted beans from? I have tried almost all here but good beans I usually grab when abroad either in Msia or SG. Malaysia is cheaper while SG is same price as here, but way better quality. Have tried:

  • Khun Witthaya in Rawai: he usually orders seat2cup from Nonthaburi. This is ok coffee, but way too expensive (325 baht/200gr) for being an entry level one. Also you need to order min 5 kilo from roaster, which is a lot.
  • Grabbed a bag of Coffeemania's 350 baht-a-250gr-bag, but that was the last one
  • Tried Phuket coffee lab, too but they are far and the quality of their blend is pulled down by the Thai beans they add to it. Their Yirgacheffe is like 2 dollars more expensive per 200gr than Singapore
  • The guy here at life a bike has been trying all sorts of beans and he was kind enough to add a bag or two to his order when we asked him. For 200 baht per 250gr Pacamara's espresso blend seems to be the price/performance champion so far and
  • Pacamara will open a shop (think not a cafe, just equipment and supplies) in Phuket town on March 13, will check them out.

Having said that, I still get way better beans abroad: Jewel coffee, or Brawn&Brains in SG, or from Butterworth/Penang/KL. In Msia, one can grab Ratawali (Aceh, Sumatra) too and that's one of my favourite next to La macarena El Salvador of Kore Ethiopia, but there are so many good beans anyway. Where are you sourcing yours from?

Have you tried Makro?  They have quite a large assortment of coffee beans.

Nah, those are really bad. Try good specialty coffee once and you'll never look back. I may buy a Nuova Simonelli Oscar though if they'd ever want to sweep out their inventory to make room for the newer version.

If you dont mind postal delivery, here are some options;

Give RedCliff Coffee (Chiang Rai) a try.  About THB 580 (including postage for a kg).  They sell as little as 250gms.  Great value if you like the taste.

Phil Coffee in Bangkok (Suk Soi 61) will also ship out.  Wide range of imported beans.  Lowest price option is THB 400/200 gms, selling at a much higher price point than Red Cliff.

Good news that Pacamara is opening in Phuket - with some luck they'll carry some coffee too.

Do you know where in Phuket Pacamara's shop will locate? Would be great to have access to some quality coffee - at present dependant on BigC's Casino brand, but it is pretty characterless - all taste much the same.

Phil is nice, but due to import tax on coffee, that's more expensive than Singapore price.

Re Red Cliff, I am not a fan of locally grown coffee. Prefer light, fruity, floral and bit acidic.

Heading to Hawaii next month.  I will bring back

my 100% Kona coffee.  I hace learned to make

my own blend of 60% Kon and 40% Bon Cafe

All Day roast.....You still have the wonderful

Kona taste and you stretches the $25/lb coffee!

Haha, you may want to dilute with something more quality stuff... I did the same with some local blends: to add at least 50% Ethiopia single origin

This is works for me...some of the local Hawaiian coffee is only

10% Kona. Bon Cafe I have found,  is light enough in taste not to

overpower the Kona....

Sadly, as with wine, import tax on coffee beans is sky high.  Unless you learn to like Thai beans, expect to pay a lot for your beans.  Up here in Pattaya we have a great roaster who does 4-5 single origin beans from around the world, but they cost 360-400 baht per 250 grams.  Always freshly roasted and they know what they are doing, so about as good as it gets in Thailand.

Personally,  I have gotten used to Thai beans and they can be decent if done right.  I pay between 140-200 baht per 250 grams from Benjamit.  They have a facebook page and probably ship to phuket.   When I lived in Phuket I bought from Hock Hoe Lee in Rawai.  They roast a bit dark and last I was there he didn't put the roast date on the package.   Can be pretty tasty if you get them when they are fresh.  Try to asking the owner for the latest roast.

Yea, Hock Hoe Lee is too dark for my taste. Had coffee there once and never bought beans... Thanks for the tip on the Pattaya roaster!

Hock Lee has an Arabica "full city roast" That isn't as dark. I had a few talks with him about making a lighter roast, he tried it and I liked it, but he said it didn't sell. He said he sells mostly the dark roast. I actually like the full city, it's very smooth and really nice smell. Very light oil on the bean. I get the whole beans and grind it as needed. It's 255 Baht for 250 G.

My dad swears by nespresso in the uk
Have you tried to get hold of Chiangrai coffee
(Grown by the hill tribe people here in the north- its really good(especially the arabica) maybe there is someone who could order it for you(200bht for 500g) as fresh as you can get
