Botched overseas surgery leaves trans woman mutilated, facing lifetime of pain

DAVID WHITE/FAIRFAX NZ

Lisa Irwin wants her botched surgery fixed so she can get on with her life as a woman without pain.

As soon as Lisa Irwin's Bangkok-based doctor removed her bandages, the trans woman knew things had gone very badly.

Because of a decades-long waiting list for a publicly funded sex change, Irwin, 44, decided to pay almost $30,000 for the surgery in Thailand.

There are no surgeons in New Zealand who can perform the complex surgery and the Ministry of Health says no one has expressed an interest in undergoing the specialised training.

This leaves those needing the surgery with very few options but to go overseas and hope for the best.

I met an old Canadian bloke when he came here for some work on his wrinkly old face. Part of the surgery was around his ears. A week later he was at the airport on his way home and the bandage slipped. He went to the bathroom for a mirror to re-tie it. When he unwound the thing his ear fell off. He cancelled his flight and went back to the hospital. It was re-attached and he went off home again. I never saw him again so cannot give you the end result.

Sure. Some... obviously not the one in this story. If i can choose between surgery at home or los i would pick home. If NOT available at home like in this story i would NOT pick los. However if i wanted to go on holiday and enjoy a couple of beers i would pick los. If i wanted to find a job abroad i would not pick los. Thailand is hit and miss on most levels.... i know to avoid the misses (pun intended!) sofar.

Medical tourism is that because it is price sensitive. You don't get the level of guarantees for the lower price. I don't know what this story is about.

Jup. Its about a guy wanting to get rid of his penis which turned out badly. I feel sorry for these people as they have suffered enough mentally but this is not a facejob or teeth bleaching. It's getting rid of your penis and the horror stories of failed cosmetic surgery in thailand are all over the net. On top of that los has very high number of antibiotic resistant bacteria, especially in hospitals. Thx but no thx......

surgery cannot be 100% successful, nowhere in the world and not even for the best surgeons in the world.

how she chose her surgeon I don't know, and we don't know the name of the hospital either.

maybe, as another poster says, price was an issue.

without knowing more about it, it's impossible to say anything.

but Thailand performs a high number of SRS, so experience and quality are definitely available.

Not to worry about such formalities in Thailand. There might be some wonderful and specially trained surgeons who can perform this type of surgery successfully. However, there are many who just hang up a shingle and can earn while they learn.

I tell anyone who asks me about medical care....Ask around and find at least 3 or 4 people who have had success with the particular M.D. in question.

I never said it can be 100% sure...

But: besides your potential quality and experience there is also a lot of mai bpen raiing when it comes to details and finetuning and me thinks a penis job needs a lot of the latter. I wont continue the discussion i only know i will not travel to thailand for any operation. Beer sun leisure hammock som dtam are my motivations!

I have read up on this topic extensively Doctors who are not plastic surgeons can perform procedures. Lots of clinics perform those surgeries and people think just because they are a doctor then can do the procedure and know what they are doing  This is not the case They should be Plastic Surgery Board Certified here in Thailand

They cost more but guess what You get what you pay for

Plastic surgeon that hold a degree in Plastic Surgery and members of the Board and know that they are doing Have the education

Would you want a foot doctor looking and your sore throat

I rest my case ;

I guess a penis reattachment would be out of the question??

Yes and I doubt you will get a good one for 30,000 baht. I had my eye brow raised after a bad bells palsy, that cost 30,000 baht. I would have to guess changing a man into a woman might be a tad more for a good procedure.

Oh Yes, Where you can buy your way out of medical exams or have others take them for you.Sure there are"Some" good doctors here but the majority of the degrees hanging in doctors are meaningless in the real world.

Nonsense, a large proportion of Thai doctors have training and degrees from the west, particularly the US.   Ahhh...maybe you were referring to those doctors?

Thailand has some of the best cut-and-shut mechanics in the world, because of the sheer numbers of ladyboys here (or those who head here).

Penile re-attachment is not unheard of. Isaan wives will cut it off and throw it to the ducks following infidelity.
