BANGKOK: -- The Thai press - seeking clarification of new excise regulations - have reported that the cost of smoking and massage is to rise.

Sanook.com reported that the cost of lighting up is likely to increase by as much as five baht per cigarette.

Excise charges on bathing at massage parlors is set to go up by 1,000 baht a time.

Chief of the excise department Somchai Phoonsawat was trying to explain what the new ceilings previously announced meant as he accepted there was some confusion from the public.

But after his explanations there was still those who were perplexed by what it all meant. Exactly how the new arrangements would impact the costs to the public were still shrouded in jargon.

However, sanook.com screamed in a headline that smokers were being fleeced and people going for a soapy bath session would have to pay a lot more.

The changes to the excise gathering arrangements have been announced in the Royal Gazette and will become law or begin to become law after a 180 day period has passed.

The new laws will also have an effect on alcohol prices and the prices of playing cards.

That will be the farang increase, in the two tier pricing system.

Thais, maybe 20 baht increase.

Does anyone really need a soapy massage? It will be interesting to see if that particular service is an "essential"?

My guess is that soapy massage parlour owners will be seeing much less custom.

But for those without vices don't feel left out if you need fuel & soda

Tax is said to be 20 baht per liter on fuels ...That sucks

Alcohol will not be spared either 30% increase +

nightclubs have to pay by area size talangmeter per year

Ah ......Although we had left last year after 5 years living ... we had hoped to return

This government is basically bankrupt. It's the only way to explain why they have been announcing a series of astonishing excise tax hikes for many goods, want to even tax sugary soft drinks, consider raising the VAT rate, eye restructuring personal income tax rates, and - last but not least - suddenly are chasing after Thaksin's tax money again.

Yet they still desperately NEED submarines...

Or if you have a tight budget.
Buy one of these.
Simply blow up in the hotel room, fill up and have tax-free fun.

I predict a huge increase in streetwalkers, love hotels, and STD's.

Sounds like a reopening of the old nataree is about to occur.

Wow, this government must be REALLY desperate.  Taxes, taxes and even more taxes.  Are they really that close to bankruptcy?  Sure seems like it.  Yet Prayut and Prawit both insist that submarines are necessary.

So way to go Prayut, price the cost of having fun in Thailand so high that the tourists will stay away, and many expats will start looking elsewhere.  Seems like the recipie for a downward spiral to me.

Smokers fleeced and massage customers milked...

Thank god that I don't smoke, drink moderately and haven't been to any of those "soapy" places in years. Next will be diet to cut the down on the sugar tax and use my bicycle more... I have gained a lot over the last couple of years so I need both the exercise and the diet anyway. :)

Anyway, I know of 3 of these soapy massage places (up country) that has already closed down after the coupe, it's not by going there myself I know about is, it's because my Thai friends are complaining about it as there has been maybe 1 or 2 places like that in the entire province. Now my friends goes on to the "resorts" instead... cheaper and parking just outside the door.

When was the last price rise for a (Balm-oil) massage , honestly I do not think in the last 15-20 years...it has been some thing that has amazed me the way its kept its price over the years......soapy don't know only been to Ann's so long ago that cant remember the price...just remember staggering out of there thinking-----wow that was worth it, must do that again---but moved to Issan---a few less choices here.............:coffee1:

Every man for himself.
Cycling is too dangerous for me here, as a sport to reduce weight.
I prefer the
soapy massages as places for exercise than.
Is certainly more expensive in the long run, but is also healthy.

Donot panic guys this may never happen  read this it explains it a little

New excise tax ceiling rates have been passed into law after they were published in the Royal Gazette on Monday.

The rates set tax levels for the next 20 years and are enforceable in the next 180 days, however, the head of the Excise Department said on Tuesday some 80 other laws would have to be enacted in order for the new amendments to be used to set % increases.

Several examples of the new ceiling excise tax rates include:

A single cigarette – 5 baht
A litre of beer – 3,000 baht
A litre of carbonated soft drinks – 20 baht
A litre of diesel – 20 baht
A single service at a massage parlour – 1,000 baht
A square metre of space in a nightclub – 1,000 baht

As I mentioned the other day, no need to panic about sharp increases as those outlined above are the maximum increases over the next two decades.

5 baht for a single cigarette would see 100 baht added to a pack of 20 – that isn’t happening in one go, nor is the 1,000 baht for a massage or any of the others in the new bill.

When will we see an actual tax increases? Likely by the end of the year but not at those rates above, that’s for sure.

This is more a scare tactic so they can raise the VAT and try to look good

This must be a printing error.
What clowns think of such a moron.

read the whole thing. this is max over 20years

I foresee a great future for Thailands neighbours if these new laws are legal.

Also King Power will get vely busy.

Maybe i'll even start smoking tobacco from the market for 80 baht a kg.

But let's face it, they even can't control the yaba or trafficoffenders so small chance they can enforce those new laws.

Or take a hot shower at home first. Actually if it gets some farang to bathe more often before heading out into public, it's a great idea.
