Cambodia: Two children killed after house catches fire

Two children were killed in a fire when their house burned down in Mondulkiri province on Thursday. The blaze in Keo Sima district was caused by the careless actions of the four-year-old boy and two-year-old girl’s parents, police said.
 

Lav Vibol, the police chief of Chung Plas commune, said the children were sleeping when the fire started at about 10pm. “The parents left their children in the house with a lit candle and went out to discuss their niece’s wedding at a relative’s house about 50 meters away,” he said.
 

Mr. Vibol said the fire killed the children, destroyed the house and burned property being stored nearby, including rice. “It was due to the carelessness of the parents,” said Mr. Vibol, adding the family belongs to the Bunong minority.
