Cambodian authorities claimed yesterday that a newly constructed casino near the Thai border in Oddar Meanchey province was entirely in Cambodian territory after a group of Thai extremists argued it was located in a contentious border area that had not been demarcated. Provincial police chief General Men Ly, whose province borders Thailand’s Buri Ram province, told Khmer Times that the casino at the Chup Koki border crossing was well within Cambodian soil.

“They [the Thais] always claim the land is theirs even if it’s within our territory,” Gen. Ly said. “Actually, it’s just a claim by a group of Thai extremists who always want Cambodian land.” The casino, owned by local tycoon Lim Heng, is set to open for business on April 7, a week before the Khmer and Thai New Year.

Thai nationalist Veera Somkwamkid had reportedly planned to visit the border to check on the casino’s location, but was blocked from leaving his resort by Thai protesters who didn’t want a flare-up of tensions along the border, the Bangkok Post reported. Mr. Veera claimed the casino could be in Thailand based on aerial photographs and a map of the border areas examined by experts.
