Government officials have announced they are to take stricter action against foreigners living illegally in Cambodia. Interior Minister Sar Kheng said at the end of the ministry’s annual meeting on Friday that in some provinces foreigners come for illegal logging, mining and fishing.

Previously, police arrested them and sent them back to their country and in some cases they were prosecuted. Mr Kheng said immigration department officials and police have to be careful about applying the law correctly.

“Foreigners who come illegally into Cambodia and commit crimes should be arrested, sent to court and expelled,” Mr Kheng said. “If we do not do that, the flow of illegal foreigners into Cambodia will grow and grow and we will be unable to prevent it.”
