YALA: -- A group of insurgents attacked a joint police-military checkpoint in Yala’s Krong Penang district early on Monday, resulting in six policemen suffering injuries.

 

The attack happened at 1.15am when a group of insurgents opened fire at the checkpoint in front of the Krong Penang market in Tambon Krong Penang.

 

Police believe there were at least five attackers.

 

Troops and police at the checkpoint exchanged gunfire with the assailants for about half an hour before the insurgents retreated.

Pol Lance Corporal (L/C) Thiraphat Sanitpoo, Pol L/C Ariaya Pimmatha, Pol L/C Jiranai Butda, Pol L/C Heramin Koseng, Pol L/C Prakit Chusup and Pol L/C Haimee Yakordung were injured.

Nine police injured in predawn drive-by attack on Highway 410 in Yala

 

 

YALA: -- Southern militants attacked a security outpost in Krong Penang district of Yala province before dawn Monday, wounding nine police.

 

The outpost is located on Highway 410 from Yala to Betong.

 

Initial report said the heavily armed militants came close to the outpost manned by police, soldiers and volunteers in a pickup truck and opened fire.

 

The drive-by attack was instantly retaliated by government forces.

 

In the exchange of fire that lasted almost half an hour, nine police were wounded.

 

The running militants later escaped in the truck under hit pursuit by a border police armoured car.

entry and exit points ? 

surely a single soldier or  police away from the main area, hunkered down and 

hidden for just such an attack , maybe the out come would have been a little different,

having a concealed solider"s  away from the main camp 

who engage once the attack has started, 

patience  and vigilance  would pay off against these numb nut cowards.

Late-night coordinated attack injures 12 police in Yala

YALA: -- Deputy national police chief Pol General Suchat Theerasawat on Monday morning inspected the scene where a group of suspected insurgents had launched a late-night attack on a joint police-military checkpoint in Yala’s Krong Pinang district, resulting in 12 policemen suffering injuries.

 

Suchat and Pol Lt-General Ronnasil Poosara, commander of the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre, instructed police investigators to speedily investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice.

 

Meanwhile, a source at an intelligence agency said the incident – which included the checkpoint attack as well as the use of road spikes and several pipe bombs, and the felling of trees and burning of tyres to obstruct officers' pursuit – was probably carried out by a Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) operations unit.

 

The attackers were probably led by insurgent suspects Abus Jeh-ali and Amad Leubaesa, who known to be active in Krong Pinang and Bannang Sata districts commanding at least 30 fighters, the source said. 

 

The attack happened at 1.15am when the suspected insurgents opened fire at the checkpoint in front of the Krong Pinang Market in Tambon Krong Pinang, resulting in a 30-minute gunfight before the assailants retreated. 

Pol Lance Corporal Thiraphat Sanitpoo, Pol Lance Corporal Ariaya Pimmatha, Pol Lance Corporal Jiranai Butda, Pol Lance Corporal Heramin Koseng, Pol Lance Corporal Prakit Chusup, Pol Lance Corporal Haimee Yakordung, Pol Lance Corporal Nikhom Thongkhao, Pol Corporal Prathom Thuaythong, Pol Lance Corporal Arthit Thanadnangseu, Pol Lance Corporal Worawuth Pongsri, Pol Lance Corporal Kanoksak Musikarak and Pol Lance Corporal Surasak Chaison were injured.

 

Yala police chief Pol Maj-General Krissada Kaewchandee led forensic officers and a bomb squad to inspect the scene afterwards. They collected five dud pipe bombs, fragments of three pipe bombs and 100 spent bullet casings from AK-47, M16 and HK assault rifles at the scene. 

 

The bomb squad also removed another eight dud pipe bombs from a spot on Highway Number 41 (Yala-Krong Pinang).

 

An inspection of CCTV recordings showed that a team of as many as seven men opened fire at the checkpoint from the roofs of nearby houses while another armed group of eight men ran across the street to fire at the checkpoint. As more police officers came to reinforce the checkpoint, resulting in one attacker being injured, the assailants retreated into a nearby wooded area. 

 

Two other teams of attackers reportedly placed the road spikes, felled trees and set tyres on fire on the highway.

Cannot defend themselves, no perimeter around the check point along with guards?  But are now expected to bring the culprits to justice, It happened at 1.15am, probably dark! Will they recognise the attackers? DUH.

If there are suspicions about those behind the attack then HQ can get off their a**ses and arrest them! No need for a fruitless investigation of unseen attackers.

The insurgents did not want to capture or hold on to a position, that would have meant certain death, which these chaps are obviously not very interested in (something else which distinguishes/distances them from the "extremists").

 

So it is more accurate to say that they "retired" rather than "retreated" (the term used in the text).

 

The second well planned and coordinated operation (with no losses to the attackers) in less than a week.

 

And not just ambushes, they are taking the war to their enemy.
