Upcoming end of extension of stay (before that, ED Visa). Planning on a border run. Need to cancel?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have an ED Visa with an extension of stay which will expire on April 10th.

So, I plan to do a border run to get a 30-day tourist Visa extension (as I understand it).

I plan to use the Thai Visa Service dot com, which will presumably go through the Ban Laem crossing (Cambodia).

The question is, do I need to get a cancellation letter from my university and then go to Immigration to cancel my extension of stay before doing the border run?

Or can I just do the border run on or before April 10th?

Thanks a lot. Please let me know if you guys need any other info.

Assuming you do not have a re-entry permit paired with the extension of stay, I do not think any cancellation is necessary with it so close to expiration. You should get your visa exempt entry without any trouble. Be aware that you are only allowed a maximum of two visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year, If you are planning to stay for extended periods in Thailand in the near future, you should husband those easy land border runs, and only use them in an emergency. While a bit late now, you might consider an out/in by air or going for a tourist visa instead.

When I was on an Ed Visa, you had to get it cancelled at an internal immigration office  , failure to do so, would mean that it was still valid, even if you leave the Country , so, returning to Thailand at a later date, you would be on an overstay

I did fly out and back in Bangkok last month, so I have a single re-entry permit (with the date April 10th) which has been been stamped "USED". Is that what you were referring to by "a re-entry permit paired with the extension of stay"?

Thanks.

Leaving the country makes the extension invalid as soon as you enter the country without using a re-entry permit. There would be no overstay after the fact.

In the past is if leaving at a couple of border crossings to Laos they wanted the extension to be canceled or you had to show a letter from the school stating the date you studies ended or they would not allow you to leave the country.

That is what he was writing about. But you do not have a valid one now so you can just leave and re-enter the country to get a 30 day visa exempt entry.

Thank you, this is why I made this thread, because the older threads said that you have to cancel the extension first.

So that law has changed and I no longer have to, right?

Thanks a lot.

Hi, if you don't mind just one more question, I just called Thai Visa Service dot com, and they said I do have to cancel my ED Visa first, otherwise I'd have problems going out. Do you have any opinion on that?

They may of had cases where people had problems but I don't recall any reports of it.

They do mention on their website a person should contact them if they have to cancel a visa which I assume means an extension. Perhaps a letter from you school stating your last day of study would be a enough.

That has been discussed in the pinned topic about online 90 reporting. You are off topic here.

It is not working at this time because immigration took down their extranet that it is on.

Just for the record, I do know some people on Ed Visas who have gone to the land border and not been allowed out without a visa cancellation letter from their School

They were able to contact their school online and they sent the letter by E-mail, which was downloaded, printed and accepted

This was a few years ago, so things may have changed again
