BANGKOK: -- Manufacturers are warned not to use "Tricloson" antibacterial substance after the substance was banned by the United States.

The warning was revealed by the Ministry of Commerce yesterday.

Malee Choke-Lamlert, the director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade, said the department has issued warning to Thai manufacturers to avoid using Triclosan for the manufacture of anti-bacterial products after US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide ban of the substance effective September 2017.

She said Thai manufacturers should avoid or stop using the substance to produce consumer products as some research work have shown that the substance also is a threat to ecological system because it kills bacteria after it was discharged into the drainage system.

The FDA stated that there was no scientific evidence to support manufacturers claims that soaps containing Triclosan are superior to regular soaps, or for that matter, regular tap water, she said.
