BANGKOK: -- About 5,000 criminal and drug suspects have been rounded up by police of First Region Provincial Police Bureau since March 31 as part of the police’s nationwide crime crackdown ahead of the Songkran festival.

Police also seized 100 illegal firearms, 500,000 methamphitamine tablets and other drugs during the same period.

Pol Lt-Gen Charnthep Sesavech, commissioner of First Region Provincial Police Bureau, said that the nationwide crime crackdown was meant to weed out illegal elements to ensure public safety during the Songkran festival.

5000 suspects in 11 days OMG and the weaponary ! do they keep these specially for photo shoots on special occassions ? Imagine how many are out there if they done this every day of the year !

Big crack down before songkran !! WOW !!

If the lazy buggers did their job every day the country would be crime free.

after Songkran weapons  will be sold back to the highest  bidder

Just goes to show what happens when the police actually are police. Given their laziness since day one, they have a lot of catching up to do.

Really?....then every police force in the world must qualify for the same title.

I love how the criminals always get a heads up. Maybe you can be more specific with the areas you'll be cracking down in?

Another day, another crackdown..

Why is nobody pointing in the picture?

There was a crackdown on pointing. The guns and drugs might be innocent until proven guilty.

In general the police know all the bad apples. The just prefer to squeeze them for tea money

but when they need a good headline they just round up the low/late payers. It sends a strong

message to the rest. Or so it seems.
