BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police chief Sanit Mahathavorn arrived at Bangkok's Royal City Avenue last night as Songkran celebrations got off to a peaceful start in the capital.

Chief Sanit brought an entourage of officers, medics, foundation staff and even some sniffer dogs but he was only there to ensure the safety of the Thai and foreign crowd enjoying the first day of Songkran, reported Thai News Agency.

But ever the policeman Sanit was concerned about young people who might have their property stolen by opportunistic thieves. He demonstrated the correct way to wear a waterproof pouch for phones and money - at the front to avoid making it easy for thieves who might cut them off.

In a speech Sanit also laid out some ground rules for enjoying the activities - no powder, no high powered water guns, no lewd behavior and no alcohol.

He added that people should try to conserve water.

He then went on a tour of the area. There were no reports that he was splashed.

Thai News Agency reported that things were peaceful across Bangkok at various venues with reports of less theft of property than usual.

Water play at RCA can continue until 12 midnight though bars are permitted to remain open until 2am as it is a zoned area.

Fine display of the police Force, simply milling about. Meanwhile real crime goes unattended as the boss glows in front of the Media for his photo shot.

Actually, a large police presence in such areas is what is needed. Had they had that in Ayuthaya where none were on hand the shooting of 8 people may have been averted. They also need such a presence on Silom; KhaoSan Road and all of Pattaya to keep the troublemakers at bay.
