Thailand holds traditional celebrations of Songkran festival

UTHAI THANI, 14 April 2017 (NNT) - Various provinces across the country are holding activities on the occasion of the Songkran Water Festival, with a tendency towards cultural traditions and safe celebrations.

Uthai Thani province has established a water play zone at the Witthayu roundabout intersection in the downtown area. The provincial administration has also organized a traditional merit-making activity to pour lustral water on the Buddha image of Uthai Thani. Locals also took their families to pour lustral water on the hands of their senior relatives, as a way of paying respects to their elders and receiving blessings for the new year.

In Kalasin province, the provincial governor led civil servants, merchants, locals and tourists in a similar merit-making activity to pour lustral water on the Buddha image of Kalasin. The activity was held at the City Pillar Shrine in the capital district. Meanwhile, a Songkran parade was held along five kilometers of Khao Kam Road. The road has been designated an alcohol-free zone for safe water play.

In Ang Thong province, three kilometers of Khao Suk Road in the capital district have been declared a water play zone. As the road grows more crowded with Songkran revelers, more than 60 soldiers and police officers have been dispatched to keep the peace.

In Chai Nat province, water play activities were toned down from the year before, even as people were allowed to ride in the back of trucks on Khao Pod Road. However, event organizers expect more people to join in the festivities on the remaining days of Songkran.
