webfact
Thailand prepared to become world jewelry hub BANGKOK, 24 April 2017 (NNT) - The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) has prepared to drive Thailand into becoming a world jewelry hub. GIT Director Phornsawat Watthanakul disclosed that the GIT has prepared measures to push Thailand to be the world’s jewelry hub and that the cabinet has recently agreed on reducing import duties on gems and jewelry. The operation plan will focus on the supply of raw materials from East Africa and ASEAN member countries such as Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. The GIT has also cooperated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize trade cooperation especially with Mozambique and Madagascar as the world’s major sources of gems and developed human resources and knowledge of new production pattern through research by universities and related organizations. -- nnt 2017-04-

maewang99
hmmm.... those things in which Thailand is a hub, or even only recently became an actual hub.... it seems quite quiet on those things... world's biggest automotive airbag fabric plant? Thailand, 2014 and counting. and last year hit many new record highs in airbag exports... no news. even with a down vehicle market. yawn. or maybe more like.... jewelry is something a Little Person can do with a few weeks or days training... and nylon 6,6 only employs a few thousand workers. so we get the wannabe hubs.... but not the real ones. kind of backwards? no. cultural..... but only with a bit of a stretch of the definition in English.... which is also... you guessed it.... cultural. darksidedog
I fear I see a flaw in this cunning plan. Where Gems are concerned, the buyer needs to be able to trust the seller, not to sell him fakes. Not quite sure that such an environment exists here. hgma
Hubs are front desks announcements for increasing prices. Hoppers are limited to 2 visits a year. So any hub is doomed to fail.

DLock
Thailand had its chance many years ago to be the gem and jewelry hub of the world, but China, and particularly Hong Kong do a much better job with Trade Shows and exhibitions whilst Thailand languishes on missed opportunities. The days of Thai cutting and polishing leadership are also coming to an end, if they aren't already. Zero chance of revitalizing Thailand as a major jewelry hub. Momentum is long gone.
