"Most hated German in Thailand" now scamming the Japanese in Osaka.

A beggar with a swollen leg who once called the Thais stupid for donating money to him is now trying to con the Japanese in Osaka.

Benjamin Holst was once described by news media as "the most hated German in Thailand" after a series of begging scams in Khao San Road and Pattaya in 2014 and thereafter.

Thais had taken pity on "Big Leg" after he spun a story about losing a bag and all his documents. Thai Rath helped him out and the Thai authorities aided him with funds to get him back to Germany.

But in no time he was up to the same old tricks - the next time begging in Pattaya where he was seen the worse for wear due to drink, somewhat legless in fact.

He said that the Thais were stupid for giving him 40,000 baht and he was now having the time of his life chasing women at the resort with the Thais' donations in his back pocket.

In subsequent years there were reports of him trying it on in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Now a Thai on a trip to Japan has seen him begging on a bridge in a tourist spot in the city of Osaka.

Adulkit Thongthip posted his experience on Facebook saying that Benjamin struck up a conversation with him about having been to Thailand a couple of years ago.

He shook the Thai's hand perhaps oblivious to the contempt with which he is held in the kingdom.

Thai Rath - now forgetting the pity and referring to him as "Ay Khaa Too" (Bloody Big Leg) - said that he was pictured on Facebook recounting his adventures to Universal Studios describing his "Very Happy Good Life".

Though perhaps all was not going to plan - a trip to Korea was on hold after he was denied a visa, said Thai Rath.

News media Coconuts described him as "the most hated German in Thailand" in a 2016 report about his activities.

Yeah right. I guess he was 'chasing women' as they were running as fast as they could.

Thai Rath should really avoid trying to be funny like this. Maybe suitable for the bar but not from a journalist, it detracts from sending an effective message about what an oxygen thief this guy really is.

I am not a medical specialist but carrying around a swollen limb, presumably without regular medical treatment (otherwise it might be fixed!) is not going to extend his life. His lack of mobility is going to create a lot of problems for him. Perhaps karma will catch up with him in that regard.

True statement from him, although I doubt he does much "chasing".  Probably sits in a chair, women come to him, until the money is gone.

What a disgrace. Go home and get treated.

The age of Aquarius is long past welcome to the age of scams. This guys big mouth and shame seems to be now preceding him. Many doors are not being slammed in his face deservedly so. In his racket staying under the radar is a must.

India suits him well.

I am amazed the Japanese don't turf him out the country. I can't remember seeing many beggars in Tokyo when I last went, but maybe I didn't look.

He will get reported to the relevant authorities eventually. Nobody will buy him a ticket or help him this time so he will be stuck. He picked the wrong place to con people. If he is convicted of even what is considered a minor crime in the west he will do hard time in Japan.

To be fair, the "scamming" would only start if another collection is taken up to get him home and it is spent on something else. Prior to that, he's just a beggar that most will ignore.

Beggars are rare in Japan but I did see one once in Osaka.

Still, weird country pick this time, Herr Holst.

Who is the other "swollen leg" guy on the picture? Where do they sell those fake swollen legs?

Indeed.  This is starting to get a little more than suspect.  At first years ago it looked like he really had a swollen leg medical condition.  Now, I don't know.  Is it a begging add on?  Is this a "photoshop" touch up?  Is that photo of the two people the same guy just super imposed photos of him in two places for comparison?

It's the same person photographed in different countries at different times.

The legs aren't fake: Mr Holst, who suffers from macrodystrophia lipomatosa, a rare form of localised gigantism ..."
