I work in Thailand and have a work permit which is renewed every year at the end of June. Based on this, I get a one-year extension of my Non-O visa every year at the end of June. But last time, the one-year extension was cut short because my UK passport expires at the end of May this year. The visa extension expiry date now matches my passport expiry date.

I have a new passport coming soon. My work permit expires at the end of June this year. I heard I can transfer the visa over to my new passport, but can I extend my visa to the end of June based on my work permit?

You will have to apply for a new one year extension in May.

On what basis have you been doing your extension. Working or marriage?

Many immigration office will issue the extension for a year even though the work permit is valid for less than a year.

I have been doing extensions based on working. But my contracts run from end of June each year. I usually have to show my employer's contract with me to get a year extension.

Do you think they will give me a year extension based on one more valid month on my work permit? Thanks.

It depends upon the office where you apply. There is no rule that says your work permit has to be valid for a year.

You might be able get you work permit extended early.

I think I worded that wrong. Do you think they will give me a year 'visa' extension based on one more valid month on my work permit?

My original visa is Non-O based on marriage. I usually go to Immigration at Chaengwattana, Bangkok.

The should give you a one year extension with only one month remaining on your work permit.

That would be perfect! I will call Immigration tomorrow and let you know what transpires (for anyone in the same boat). Thanks for tip.

Nope, non-O visa can't be extended based on WP alone. Went to Immigration today. Contract with employer is needed, which I showed and got a year extension.

So what documents did you need for Non-O extension (based on work). I have been extending a non-b based on work and always had to have director letter, school information, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Are you saying for the non-o extension you just had WP and contract from school?

Yes, I needed a whole bunch of stuff too. They wouldn't extend my visa based on my current WP with more time on it.

In the end, I had to do it the usual way and produce all the other stuff you mentioned.

So I guess the moral of the story is: if your visa expires before your work permit does, you can't just show your WP to get an extension.
