Phnom Penh Municipal Court has ordered Radio Free Asia journalist Chun Chanboth to report to the authorities after he failed to appear for questioning yesterday. The popular radio commentator, who is deputy director of RFA’s US-based Khmer service, left Cambodia for Thailand last week.

He was scheduled to appeaar in court yesterday, over claims he lied to gain access to opposition activists in prison. On Friday, Mr Chanboth sent a letter to the court through his lawyer. It said he would be going to meet the RFA team in Thailand over the weekend, but would return on Monday in time for his hearing yesterday.

However a statement from RFA management said they had asked the journalist, also known as Vuthy Huot, not to return to Cambodia. Rohit Mahajan, director of public affairs at RFA, said the organisation was concerned for the safety of their employee.
