webfact
NLA panel suggests inclusion of Muay Thai in curriculum By The Nation BANGKOK: -- A sports subcommittee of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has proposed the inclusion of Muay Thai in the national educational curriculum to help develop the Thai sport. The chairman of the NLA subcommittee on sports, Maj-General Jaruk Areeratchakaran, said on Wednesday that his panel had been working on plans to elevate and develop Muay Thai, which is currently lacking an integrated body or system to regulate, control, direct or even protect its interests both domestically and abroad. Jaruk suggested that educational institutions add Muay Thai in their curriculum as a formal class or a special activity to promote physical workouts. He said such an approach would help students learn and understand more about the Thai traditional sport while helping to preserve it. The subcommittee also proposed the setting up of an agency or putting a group of individuals in charge of Muay Thai. A suggestion report will be prepared and presented to the NLA committee overseeing education and sports for its consideration soon. darksidedog
Oh, Brilliant idea. Not. These people may not have noticed that there is a lot of violence in Thai society already. Encouraging kids to learn how to fight and how to really hurt people, is probably not a good idea for those not mentally capable of controlling their emotions. Strangely enough, people who really learn and train martial arts rarely misuse the skill. They become much more disciplined. Japan, where many many people achieve high level in one or more martial arts is a good example.

kingstonkid
Let's see Thai kids can not write Thai, can not do simple math, have no idea about their country, have little ethics and responsibility in their lives but we are going to train them to beat the crap out of each other. Please do. It just makes it easier for those of us that have schools to get students LOL

Seems like the perfect recipe for Thai society, to me... After all, there's always a market for well-trained bouncers to work on Walking Street to maul those accused of disputing their bills. Though we all know the positive side of martial arts, I too can understand why your doubts.
kingstonkid
The issue is not the martial art but who would be instructing it and how the students react to it. Imagine basketball if the kids just want to throw the ball.
