HI, I wish to leave my language school immediately because i wish to go to another school. I have a work permit but no contract and I have worked there for 2 years. Does the work permit mean I have to work until that runs out? If i have no contract does that mean I am not bound to any obligations? Can i simply walk in and say I quit, thankyou and goodbye? I have a non o marriage visa that has nothing to do with my employment.

Thanks for any help.

Ubjoe will answer....

you have a work permit but no contract?   How is that possible, when you apply for the contract is needed... I believe you may have to give the appropriate notice. I believe in the paperwork and procedures, you cannot quit a school and then start another one.  The previous school needs to be notified.

Regarding your non-O, an extension of stay I would be interested in seeing how this plays out.

It is always a challenge to transfer, especially if you are not on a favorable egress...

Cheers Mate

Would a contract of some sort not have been required to get the work permit?

are you sure you are not on a rolling contract that is renewed yearly without requiring a signature unless conditions of employment are changed.

sounds a bit strange to me

Agree, there must be some sort of contract, I'm sure.

The proper way would be to submit a resignation and cancel your work permit. That might eliminate any problems if you want to work here again.

You are not obligated to stay until your work permit ends.

Since you have an extension based upon marriage it is not effected by you no longer working.

Thanks. Do they have to accept it? If i had a contract I would of received a bonus. I never signed anything in English in the past 2 years. I may of signed something in Thai, I feel that this was a trick used.

Why is it a trick to have contract in Thai language in Thailand. If they didn't provide a translation, maybe it was up to you to get one?

Unless it was in the contract a annual bonus would not be given.

If they terminated your contract you would be entitled to severance pay under the labor protection act.

If you never had a contract then why would you expect a bonus?

But what happens if the extension of stay is based on 40K salary rather than the 400K in the bank? The latter would eliminate any problems, but what about temporarily becoming unemployed in the latter case?

The proof of income is only needed to apply for the extension. Once the extension of stay based upon marriage is done it does not matter what happens with the income.

Because its in the schools policy, if you complete a contract you get a 10k bonus. Everyone else is given a contract in English that clearly states this. I signed one in my first year but they said they never had a copy of it when I asked for it. I felt grateful because I got a work permit without a degree, but now I see whats really going on and I want to leave. I always thought I could leave  when I wanted to because I had no contract.
