Governments laments big powers criticism

The European Union and the US State Department have condemned the extended detention of the Adhoc Five, saying the pre-trial delay is unreasonable and breaches their rights. The criticism was rejected by the Cambodia government as interference in the domestic affairs of Cambodia.
 

Government spokesman Phay Siphan said EU ambassador George Edgar had violated the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations by interfering in internal affairs related to “bribery involving the opposition leader sex scandal”. “Where is the honour of the European Union?” Mr Siphan asked.
 

An EU statement criticised the fact the April 27 court decision to extend the detention of Adhoc members Lim Mony, Nay Vanda, Ny Sokha and Yi Soksan and former member Ny Chakrya by six months followed their detention without trial for a year. “It is important that rights of these five individuals be fully respected and that any breaches of their rights under Cambodian law and under the international agreement to which Cambodia is a signatory be appropriately remedied,” it said.
