China-USA stand-off in Thailand re; human rights

Recommended Posts

This is a story you probably won't hear about in Thai news reports, because when it was resolved, Chinese officials made everyone present insist on not letting the story out.   However, I found the story on US's NPR.  In a nutshell, the wife of a Chinese dissident named Chen Guiqiu (a professor of environmental science) and their two kids fled to Thailand.  They were detained in Thailand (probably from an official Chinese order to Thai officials).  US embassy personnel heard they were about to be forcefully returned to China. American diplomats went to the jail at the same time as the Chinese officials.   What ensued was a couple of tense stand-off between US and Chinese officials, with Thai officials in the mix.   The wife and kids were eventually allowed to go to the US.   Details here, with audio option.

Could any of you see Obama or Slick Willi doing this?

Both Obama and Bill Clinton are miles ahead of Trump re; human rights.  Same for HRC.  Indeed, that's a big reason why Russians and Chinese leaders didn't like Hillary: she speaks up publicly when she sees human rights problems.

It was printed in the other English language newspaper on 7th May

Thanks for that.  I assumed it wasn't reported in Thai newspapers because the Chinese didn't want the news to get out.  I'm glad to be proven wrong in that regard.

Must admit I was surprised to see it; it was the AP report, complete with picture.

But I didn't see any follow up reports, and it seems that TV's partner overlooked it too!

Both of them did nothing. Just sat there when the going got tough, all talk and no action.

Not saying that trump will be a great president but at least he stands up for his country instead of running it down.

We don't agree.  I think Trump is debilitating the US and its people every day.  I do, however, agree with the US diplomats who interfered positively, as mentioned in the OP.   Was Trump a part of that intervention.  Maybe, but it's doubtful he would get involved in a small incident like that in a small country on the other side of the world.  He's too busy eating ice cream and tweeting lies.  But then again, maybe he did something right.   Even a criminal can do something right once in awhile.

I am not an American so am not entitled to say who should be or not be President of the United States.

All I know is that under the Clinton and Obama regimes, America became poorer, it's economy went downhill, the ability to run efficient security organisations was put in jeopardy and the Presidents were conspicuous in their inaction on the world stage when leadership was needed..My opinion only based on facts presented in the media.

How anyone can judge Donald Trump after just a few months baffles me. He has been decisive so far and despite the attempts of the main media to rubbish him, he has stood his ground. President Obama and his First lady have broken with a long tradition and criticised an incoming President and continue to do so. Sour grapes that Hilary did not get in?

Give the man a chance. Criticise him after his first term and if you are an American and do not like what he has done, vote for another person, it's called democracy.

To whinge and complain after such a short time only shows that you are a dyed in the wool Democrat who will never see the good things a Republican President may accomplish.
