Cart-pullers yesterday clashed with customs officials at the Poipet international border gate in Banteay Meanchey province. The disagreement was over whether taxes should be paid on imported goods.

A fruit cart-puller who asked not to be named said the incident occurred when officials stopped their carts for checks. The cart-pullers were unhappy about being stopped, because fruit imports from Thailand have been tax-free for the past few years.

“When the customs officials check our carts, they always move things around and don’t put them back properly, so we have to reorganise everything before we can deliver it to the buyers,” he said. “We don’t know exactly why they decided to block our carts.”
