Overnight rains caused flooding at 25 spots around Bangkok, says governor
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Governor Assavin Kwanmuang said that overnight rains had caused flooding at 25 spots around the capital.

The governor, however, said due to improvement in efficiency BMA officials managed to tackle flooding in most areas before the morning rush hours at 7am.

He said flooding on Sukhumvit Soi 26 was resolved by 8.30am as the area was complicated.

“I’ve instructed BMA officials to make preparations to deal with flooding during the rainy season since early this year by draining sewers and increasing the capacity of our water pumps,” the governor posted on his Facebook wall.

The flooding monitoring centre of the BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department reported that it had tackled waterlogging at several spots in the capital.

It said it took about one hour to drain floodwater under the BTS Baring station after the area was flood at 1.30am.

It also took about an hour to drain floodwater in front of the Benz showroom on Pattanakarn Road in Suan Luang district after flooding was reported at 1.45am.

Lets now go through the recent history just to recap. June 2011 - Singburi and the central plain area start to flood, August 2011 PTP becomes the government, September 2011 BKK starts to flood, 2011 = worst flood in 50 years. There are nearly 30 government departments and agencies involved in water management in the country, thus chaos ensues during crises. In 2012 and 2013 plans are draw up to prevent future floods, part of the plan gets implemented (securing industrial estates), the bigger plan however runs into the yellow shirts protests. Yellow shirts don't want the water ways to go through their areas (as there are no other areas for the water ways the plan is stopped). May 2014 small green men come to power, they cancel the contract for the Koreans to draw up a water management plan and use the money for drought relief. The rest of history will be written and it will include another flood because nothing have been learned and nothing has changed (excluding the government) since the last flood.

Bangkok residents who took  advice from the previous governor and fled to the mountains have nothing to worry about.

Starting to miss the previous governor. In spite of his "great advice" , expensive junkets, fancy lightshows and office refurbishments, at least he didn't banish the street food.
