BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry will ask the Cabinet next week to approve an additional 8,792 positions for civil-servant nurses.

Public Health Minister Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said on Friday that the positions had already been approved by the committee governing the government workforce.

The approval came after the Cabinet earlier this week agreed to review its previous decision not to create new civil-servant positions for nurses who are now working as employees or temporary employees at state hospitals.

The review took place amid nurses’ protests and threats by nurses to quit and move to private medical facilities.

“These additional positions for civil-servant nurses will be made available between 2017 and 2019,” Piyasakol said.

It's a shame that it is going to take three years for all the positions to be opened up, but it it is still much better news for the nurses, who thoroughly deserve it.

A week ago, no new spaces were going to open up till 2026. The only concern now being for the Govt to honour its word.

Yes your last statement is key. The great white wall has pushed back and made the government blink. I think the government smelled populism in this situation and caved in a bit. Angels of Mercy in troubled times.

Mmm when making decision to buy 3 old subs was it as hard as this? Look i am sceptical these nurses position will never happen the subs are more important than human life. As for that minister who seems to be trying to help he is not really he is just try to save face so the nurses think he is on there side He already knows the answer  what the cabinet will say.

PM to Minister of health  What more important ?1 Subs 2 nurses 3 You fat pay packet Now no more talk
