CODI trying clear up land rights in tsunami-hit provinces

The director of Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI), Ms. Somsook Boonyabancha, has affirmed that the problem of land rights in the six provinces along the Andaman coast is being solved, and the officials have traveled to the areas in order to dealt with the problem more clearly.

Ms. Somsook is following up on the restoration of the tsunami-stricken areas in the six provinces along the Andaman coast. Since the tsunami tragedy on December 26th 2004, various agencies and NGOs have been working together to renovate the damaged areas and accommodations while aiding the local people to have better living conditions and careers.

However, around 40 to 50 communities are experiencing the issue of land rights, and it is not easy to clearly specify them. As a result, other problems have followed. Officials have therefore traveled to the areas to work with relevant units in order to clearly bring this ongoing problem to a close.

Ms. Somsook said the next mission is to help strengthen other organizations because there are still many problems that need to be worked out together. She added that one of the best solutions is to solve the problems within the communities.
