Masters Degree but no BA degree

Featured Replies

I hold a Masters Degree but I don't have a batchelor degree.  Does anyone know if it is possible for me to get a teaching  license and work permit.

My course was 3 years full time study.  I have letters from the university stating the reasons why I was excepted on the course without a BA degree.  I also have letters stating that the course is higher than a BA degree.

It it seems strange that they shouldn't accept it.  But it's Thailand so I feel anything is possible.

if anyone could help with this I would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Was this an accredited University ?

hhmm....  unusual   ... they ask for your undergrad transcripts now...  generally out here you go through the hoops... Do you hold an MATEFL?

It's a MA TESOL from a U.K. University.

Clearly your masters qualifies you to teach.

BUT ............... this is Thailand and a masters is not on the list. Even though it supersedes a BA, it is not on the list. If the people at the TCT don't see a BA then your masters isn't on the list. Commonsense should tell them that it is better than a BA but, (you guessed it), it is not on the list.

No amount of explaining, rational thinking and pure common sense will convince them because ...................... a BA is on the list.

Its not on the list. :passifier:

Same here. Happens a lot in the UK educational system. Unheard of in the USA and TH educational systems. Applied for my initial TCT teacher license in September 2011 and received it in November 2011. Applied for my second one in April 2016 and got the new one a month later.

The list that TCT have is outdated. Many accredited universities are not on their list. If it isn't on the list, then it doesn't exist.

A simple google check will show them it is accredited but if it isn't on the list then it doesn't exist.

No amount of showing them the Uni online or on government documents from the UGC or DEAC for example does not help.

If it isn't on the list, it doesn't exist.

Say it with me .................. "If it isn't on the list then ........................."    and you know the rest.  :passifier:

...then again as you know, depends on the school situation ...  privates call their own shots...  no shame to their game...

We had a teacher some years ago who was turned down for the visa when he showed up with his Master's Degree, transcript and verification.   He had a Bachelor's but didn't have it in Thailand.

He was held up until he got the Bachelor's Degree and transcript and then both the non-B and the Work Permit were granted.

You can expect problems if you don't have the Bachelor's Degree.

In my experience labour office and immigration only want to see your highest educational diploma/degree. I have never needed to show my bachelor. The labour office form specifically asks for your highest education. Of course this is Thailand, so your mileage my vary.

The only time I was asked about my bachelor was when I applied either for the cultural course or a waiver, and that was only being asked. Probably to check if I had a degree in education. For my teaching license it was never asked of me and not part of the documents I submitted.

How long does a taught Masters degree take?

In the UK, most taught Masters programmes run for one year full-time and two years part-time. Be aware, however, that full-time courses run for a full twelve month period, with independent dissertation work usually commencing after the first two semesters and continuing during the summer.

The typical on-site master's degree program takes two years of full-time study to complete.

sorry mate! wrong thinking from my side based on continental Europe (i'm German) universities. until a few years ago we had no bachelor degrees. you made your master's or you had nothing. the master's you mentioned is obviously based on an existing bachelor. but i'm sure that doesn't apply to natural sciences, e.g. chemistry, physics or others such as medicine, pharmacy and law. in Germany it took me 7 years (full time) to obtain a master's in physics.
