For those who order food via Meals On Wheels has anyone considered Uber? I ask because I'm close to one of my favorite restaurants and I found out I can actually take an Uber vehicle to and from the restaurant "CHEAPER" than the delivery service from Meals On Wheels which I consider a rip-off anyway! I've even talked to an Uber driver who will do delivery service for me for less than 1/2 the price!!! Any thoughts???

Another option would be to order directly from the restaurant and see if they will deliver.

You could pay them directly via OLB.

Alternately, is LINEman available in Chiang Mai ? (Line app which Motorcycles use for delivery).

Another option, ask your local motorcycle rider to do the pick-up for you.

Yes, another good option!!! My point is there are much cheaper options then Meals On Wheels!

In a city/country where the cost of a meal ranges from 30 to 50 baht:

A foreigner, having determined that a 70 baht delivery charge for western/premier food is excessive,  is exploring cheaper ways to have food delivered to his residence.

My thoughts, and you did ask:

Should you really be here!

Hi Simoh? Are you a shill for Meals On Wheels or don't you know the real cost for delivery? 100+ baht for a 300 baht pizza! Plus it's nice to give a tip! Enjoy your 30 to 50 baht meals. Of course it depends on where you live but who doesn't like to save money. A 50 baht delivery charge from Uber is better than 120!!! You can do whatever you'd like!!!

I wouldn't know what the cost of food delivery is, if I want to eat I/we either: go to the market/grocery store, buy the ingredients and cook it ourselves, or, go to a restaurant/food outlet/stall, buy the food and eat - the idea of calling someone to deliver ready cooked food to my home is alien, almost American in nature and not a natural part of the native scene in Thailand, and then quibbling over the cost of that delivery and trying to save a dollar twenty is something even more weird, but that's just me.

The real Ubereats will surely be coming to Chiang Mai soon.  It's a pretty good deal in Bangkok.  Free delivery for the first few months and now it's 30 baht per delivery with lots of specials and vouchers.

I asked the question initially just to save people some money. Some people may be ordering food, unlike you, on a regular basis. If it's not important to you why even make a comment. Saving 50 or 70 baht is not that big a deal to me either. But if you make 10 or 15 orders a month it might add up! You don't get food delivery??? Good!!! So why are you even interested in this??? Maybe everyone doesn't have the deep pockets you have. Do you ever look for shirts on sale? How about shoes?

Clearly you don't have a clue what goes on in Thailand. I couldn't count how many times each day I see McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Company, S&P,  Oishi and many others zipping past my house to deliver ready cooked food to Thai people; including students.

I see a significant difference between food outlets who make their own product then deliver it and a third party who will deliver from virtually any restaurant and shop. I think the former is a natural extension of the making and selling process. The latter is more opportunistic entrepreneurial commerce which is more western  than Asian in that promotes laziness and to a lesser degree, anti-social behaviour. Eating food prepared outside the home should be a social event that involves other things such as being with people, discussion and/or seeing new sights, in the same way that drinking inside the home for many people is a big no no since drinking should be a social experience rather than an isolationist one. Ultimately, both of those things encourage people to stay home more, explore less, become more isolated and get more fat.

And if it comes down to a cost issue, there are certainly more cost effective ways to buy food rather than having it delivered from often pricey western style restaurants.

I don't feel passionate about this issue, it's simply an observation that this is a service that is looking for business rather than a service that was crying out to be born based on consumer demand, in Thailand at least.

You may wish to ask the aliens to adjust your implants' UPS (Universal Position System) component the next time you are on the mother-ship, and I'd suggest you ask them to dial-down the grinch factor a bit.

I'm glad you liked it. And if you enjoyed that one you'll love my views regarding the suitability of establishing a democracy in Thailand, that also is not popular with herd members.

I think he means for good food, not starvation rations that most Thais eat.

In order to save one buck, or a buck and a half...really. Here's the downside. Most restaurants put the orders from Meals on Wheels at the front of the cooking queue so the drivers don't have to wait. Don't expect the same service from a one-off phone-in take-out order - if the person answering understands English.

Food Panda

Agree and I use FoodPanda exclusively but even they've been creeping up in cost lately, wanted 90 baht to deliver Subway last time I checked vs when they started and all deliveries were about 40 baht.

Their delivery times are a joke too on occasion (usually the occasion when I'm really hungry).

Recently I've attempted to use Food-Panda 3 times and ended up calling and cancelling the order after 1 hr of waiting.

The last time I attempted to use Food-Panda, I was called back 30mins later to be informed that one of the items was not available, I cancelled the order again (Ok not their fault, apart from the 30 minute delay).

A friend has also had very similar issues which resulting in him cancelling after 1 hour.

Both of us no longer bother use Food-Panda..  they charge extra for the items and then for delivery which IMO takes too long. Invariably we order directly from the restaurant and ask them to deliver it call a motorcycle and ask them to collect for us.

This is in Bangkok, but I'm sure the same possibilities remain in Chiang Mai - Use a Motorcycle rider to collect your food for you... this always seems to work well for us (although he could just disappear with your money, but most are honest, or you could just pay online for the food, and give the motorcycle rider some cash for the pickup and delivery).

I've just stopped the wife going anywhere for any period of time which ends up with me having to fend for myself. [emoji2]

I thought it would be good to clear out some things. We are not an International Corporation. We are not Uber Eats, Foodpanda, Grub Hub or any of the other big boys. We are not listed on the FTSE, NASDAQ nor do we have 100’s of millions of dollars to back us. We are a small family business based in Chiang Mai. Husband and wife (like a mom and pop shop) and all we’re trying to do is put our kids through school (not International) we cannot afford it and try to have a reasonable family life.

Some of the larger delivery companies can afford to give discounts or free deliveries in certain cities as they will compensate in other larger countries/cities. We don’t have that option.

We try to ask the restaurants for a higher percentage so we can reduce our delivery fee but they cannot afford to do so also. It seems in Chiang Mai most restaurants cannot give 30% discounts as they do in Bangkok or other larger cities. We understand this, but it’s difficult to explain to some  customer ‘hey if we get 30% discount we can offer deliveries for 30 Baht because the restaurant is paying’ Maybe some of you guys can help and push them to give higher discounts so then voila our delivery fee drops to half or even free.

We employ quite a lot of staff and we pay them over the minimum wage, sick pay, delivery fees, bonuses, we feel it’s good to give something back to the local community and not be slave drivers.

We pay National Insurance, Corporation Tax, Rent, other bills. Our telephone bills alone to call restaurants and customers, drivers is over 40,000 baht a month.

I can provide our accountants phone number if more clarification is needed as to where the money goes.

Most people who know us personally  know we work 7 days a week 15 hours a day to provide the best service we can for very little money for ourselves (We would be better off working for someone)

We regularly get emails from customer who really appreciate our service and are thankful we are around. We sometimes will give credit if a customer is ill or cannot get to an ATM, free food and delivery if they cannot pay. Pick up groceries if they cannot get out.Try doing that with some of the bigger companies.

Lastly it is the customer’s choice if they choose to order through us. We don’t force anyone or put a gun to someone’s head and say they must order food delivery through us.

Thanks to all our customers and have a good evening!

With Meals on Wheels I call from my computer and can still be sat there when a guy knocks on my door to deliver.

Fast and reliable with a large choice of Real Restaurants not just Fast Food outlets.
