What is the future of Patong?

I've enjoyed reading the "Patong is Dead" thread over the years - yes, years. I particularly enjoy Xylophone on street reporting, and commentary by LIK, KarenBravo and Bulldozer Dawn.

To be fair, I don't live there, and only travel to Phucket for a couple of weeks a year. Lately I just do one night in Patong and then spend the rest of my time in Chalong where things move a little slower and people are generally nicer.

I had heard from some of the people I know in Patong that some holders of Master Leases are considering wholesale make overs in getting rid of bars and putting shopping or upscale - maybe a Casino is in the works? This is for Bangla, other areas I have no idea.

Thank you for starting this new topic. So refreshing after that last now 106 page topic ...

Patong will survive. In my 21 years now in Patong I have witnessed along Nanai Road at least 3 times smaller building demolished and a higher building constructed. The circus rolls on. Are any of the short term leaseholders making money ... I doubt it.

The circus will continue to roll ..

I am disappointed that this new topic has gained zero traction. That old Patong is Dead topic has gone on for far too long and is now just a flame fest ....

Come on, do you really believe that this new thread ,if it gets up and running ,will not simply carry on exactly the same flame fest from the other ,well past its prime thread.?

Phuket and Patong will never die but keep battling on thru good and bad times

Lots more of every type of business over the last ten years but the tourist numbers have not grown at the same rate

Lots more bars if that's your scene, always being put back on the market after a short time because the current lessor has run out of funds, they really do believe what they are told about turn over and profits made

The only way to buy a established business anywhere is on audited tax figures not some made up figures wrote down in a book

Goodwill/ key money is based on a businesses real profits, you pay a fee for the already proven established business only as proven by its previous years tax returns (more than one so you can see how the business has progressed)

Plenty of the current posters on this forum will be gone as the years go by but Phuket and patong will keep thriving long after they are gone

It would be interesting to see if monied interests from Bangkok put more influence toward Patong. As long as patong is gripped by a few "influential families," I suppose it won't change, or change much. Maybe a better thread title might be, what would be good for Patong?

I'll start that now.
