PATTAYA: -- Police have mounted a murder hunt after a former monk was found battered to death on Tuesday.

They believe they may find the murderer amongst foreign workers nearby.

Pattaya police found 40 year old Kritsana Merakun dead in a room next to the crematorium at Wat Bun Kanchanaram on Sukhumvit Road.

He had two wounds to the head inflicted with a heavy object.

He was covered in monk's clothing.

Nearby police found a hammer covered in clothing.

It is thought that the victim had been dead for at least 12 hours.

A female trader outside the temple said that she saw the victim emerge from the temple on Monday to buy alcohol at a shop. He then went back and the next she heard was that he had been found dead.

A monk at the temple said that the victim was a former monk that had been assigned to the temple. After he left the monkhood he often came back to stay especially during temple fairs.

He said that the victim was a kind hearted fellow who never made trouble for anyone.

Police believe that he had an argument while drinking. Nothing was stolen but an attempt had been made to conceal the body with clothing.

They are interviewing foreign workers in the area to see if the murderer is among them.

How pathetic is that, foreign workers near by, so it must be 1 of them.

Or foreign workers near by, 1 of them will be fitted up for murder.

Wont be the first time that has happened.

It is utterly appalling that the "A Thai person couldn't have done this" mentality so often comes out. You just know if they can't find who actually did do it, that some poor Burmese or Cambodian is going to end up being the scapegoat. No one has forgotten Koh Tao.

Yes and its a very Thai thing to do. Kill someone in a drunken argument. It seems to happen a lot here.

Lao Cao should be renamed. LOKO juice

Alcohol consumption in temple grounds!  Whatever next - sex parties?

Been there, done that. Nothing much that hasn't happened in Buddhist temples. But let's remember Buddhist temples are Thailand's old folks homes/mental asylums. You go there when nobody else can/will care for you. Most monks are not there for the meditation etc.
