BANGKOK — As Thailand moves closer to its first election since the 2014 coup – possibly as soon as next year – many wonder whether junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha will step down from his post or continue his tenure as premier, one way or another. Be careful what you ask for, as it can result in an election with only 1 candidate and harsh punishments for anyone saying anything negative about that candidate. There was a news article last week that it would take a coalition of the top 4 parties, including PT and Democrats, in order to appoint a politician as PM. PTP successfully game the system and beat MMP by splintering into multiple parties before the election and then coming back together as a coalition after the election with 251 of the 500 seats. 2. The Democrats choose Democracy over Dictatorship and throw in with the other political parties to trump the military. Of the two, the first is most likely because Thaksin is a clever old bugger while the Democrats have far too many members who aren't really for democracy. Five or six years of lecturing about the need for democracy, a fair society and tackling corruption, patronage and privilege for the few culminates in this little plan against all the promises and hands on hearts poses. And these would-be politicians use a word like ''loophole'' to imply it was a genuine oversight rather than deception. Different band, same old music.. So, there may be an election in 17 or 18 months time, how cheering. The chances of it happening even then are slim. The guy's just getting started, and he has a whole lot more misery to dish out.
