BANGKOK — As Thailand moves closer to its first election since the 2014 coup – possibly as soon as next year – many wonder whether junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha will step down from his post or continue his tenure as premier, one way or another.

Under the new charter drafted at the junta’s behest, it is possible for Gen. Prayuth to continue serving as prime minister without standing in an election – whether or not a parliamentary majority nominates him – through a loophole written into the new junta-backed constitution.

Next year would be about 3 years later than first promised - not quite sure "soon" is the right word here.

Was going to post the same thing. It was supposed to be each of the last few years, they are already giving up on this year and possibly next year? Let's call it what it is. Prayuth has no intention of ever giving up power.

loophole?  irrelevant. He took over when he wanted and threw out the constitution.  A piece of paper that has been tossed out and re written dozens of times is pretty much meaningless and the country simply does not embrace the concept

I thought he had quit politics.  Or, is he like his nemesis and you cannot believe a word that comes out of his mouth?

This man needs to be banned from any public office for like as he had lead to the destruction of Thailand as a viable state.

I have for some time suspected that the popular participation in choosing the next government will be limited to a shout of acclamation from Sutheps Great Movement.

No need to bother with all the "fol de roi" of political parties, ballots, campaigns and so on. They only disrupt happiness and are so unnecessary.

The people (well those that matter) will speak ...

So let the people vote for and lets find out if you're right or wrong.

Be careful what you ask for, as it can result in an election with only 1 candidate and harsh punishments for anyone saying anything negative about that candidate. And the military going around "explaining" why this is the best candidate possible.

See the vote on the new constitution for the playbook.

What are the differences with delaying election or sneaking an non elected PM or another coup. Thailand will continue to be screwed by the elites and the military for the unseeable future and will stay in the dark age.

“I want to tell all the politicians that the people want Gen. Prayuth to be prime minister!” radical conservative activist Suthep Thaugsuban told reporters Thursday.

So let the people vote for and lets find out if you're right or wrong.

Unfortunately, the game has been rigged to the point that the elections will be rendered almost meaningless. There was a news article last week that it would take a coalition of the top 4 parties, including PT and Democrats, in order to appoint a politician as PM. That will never happen, so the junta appointed senate will be the deciding factor, which makes the odds good for Prayut.

Considering the appointed senate, appointed PM and appointed courts and other controlling committees, the elected house will have about the same relevance as the current lane duck rubber stamp NLA.

I wonder how long it will take before they copy the very clever Myanmar Model: buy the icon of opposition to act as a figurehead and leave the power in the hands of the military...

Under the rigged constitution democracy has two chances:

1. PTP successfully game the system and beat MMP by splintering into multiple parties before the election and then coming back together as a coalition after the election with 251 of the 500 seats.

2. The Democrats choose Democracy over Dictatorship and throw in with the other political parties to trump the military.

Of the two, the first is most likely because Thaksin is a clever old bugger while the Democrats have far too many members who aren't really for democracy.

There is no end to this regime unless the people decide to end it. At that point, things have reached the point of no return. As long as Thailand has a "disposable Democracy" this situation will continue ad infinitum.

The people would end it if the present lot went back to their barracks and allowed them to hold an election.

Nothing like a few  loopholes to reinforce Thai-style democracy when an aspirational boy needs them.. Five or six years of lecturing about the need for democracy, a fair society and tackling corruption, patronage and privilege for the few culminates in this little plan against all the promises and hands on hearts poses. And these would-be politicians use a word like ''loophole'' to imply it was a genuine oversight rather than deception. Different band, same old music..

'Possibly as soon as next year'. Not exactly the most encouraging or optimistic sentence. So, there may be an election in 17 or 18 months time, how cheering. The chances of it happening even then are slim. The guy's just getting started, and he has a whole lot more misery to dish out.
