Australian filmmaker gets arrested again

Featured Replies

An Australian filmmaker and journalist who was arrested last week was yesterday re-arrested and sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning. James Ricketson, 68, was initially detained for using a drone camera to film prohibited areas in front of the Royal Palace, but freed on Saturday after being cleared of terrorism or involvement in a colour revolution.

Mr Ricketson deleted the images he had taken, which were of an opposition CNRP rally, and signed a contract with police promising not to do it again. However a senior officer with the Interior Ministry’s internal security police unit said the man was back in custody at a local police station last night.

“He was re-arrested after police followed him and suspected his activities were linked with the opposition party’s rallies before and during the commune elections,” the officer said.  He said Mr Ricketson was still being questioned by the court’s prosecutor, but could not give further details of the accusations against him.
