PM: Govt places priority on terrorism issue

BANGKOK, 14 June 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has affirmed that the government attaches significance to the problem of terrorism and has been cooperating with other countries to prevent it.

Commenting on recent warnings of violent incidents in the southern region, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha clarified that they were part of the usual security protocol and should not be a cause for panic. He insisted that anti-terrorism work is receiving major emphasis from the government and is high on the national agenda as cooperation is being made with various countries that have expressed concerns about the issue.

In regard to the recent arrest of an arms trafficking ring, the premier said investigations are underway and related authorities are in the process of interrogating suspects and gathering concrete evidence. As for the bombing incident at Phramongkutklao Hospital, he revealed that investigators are working to identify links with other cases while asking for more time.

Meanwhile, following the World Economic Forum’s ranking of Thailand among the 20 most dangerous countries, Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said she has acknowledged the matter and pointed out that the inclusion of Thailand on the list was considered solely based on the situation in the Deep South.

The Minister expressed belief that foreign tourists have a sense of how the overall situation truly is in Thailand. Nonetheless, she gave assurances that the government is not underestimating the issue of insurgency and is closely coordinating with all security units.

So, bombs in Bangkok and Hua Hin, beatings, murders, rapes, robberies, not to mention the worlds second most dangerous roads, didn't affect the rating?

On the other hand:

The government can't have it both ways.

If the violence in the southern region is part of the usual security protocol, then violence in the south region is no more unique than other violence throughout Thailand. (note that the southern region is NOT part of the usual security protocol as it's still under martial law whereas the rest of the nation is not)

What the government can have is that danger of violence to 60 million Thais and 40 million tourists throughout Thailand as a whole is not much different than found in the small area of the southern region occupied by 4 million people.

No this didn't affect the rating. The only thing that caused a bad rating was the situation in the south.. all tourist coming to Thailand know this.

Well let's give the boys in the army a chance to safen and clean things up??.....

One thing is for sure that if crackers continue to pop up in the streets of Bangkok, Phuket or Hua Hin, tourists will end up in going elsewhere....with or without any potential statistical manipulation!!

It also appears that many expats living in Thailand seem to feel not so welcome anymore and this is reflected in the subtle hostile attitude of a proportion of locals during their dealings or interactions with farangs....pity that people cannot make up with each other without stigmatizing or envying  race, colour, religion, wealth or the chest size of their Thai honeys!!
